I don't know if it was just me or the professor but I had to spend an abnormal amount of time doing the homework which I never did super well on... the quizzes were easy and straightforward with her given hints, but the midterms and exams were so hard! The class was pretty brutal.

She was easily the best math teacher I had at UCSB, I have no idea how people are complaining about her. She's really nice and approachable and great at answering questions. I almost never used the book.

Overall good teacher. She explains the topics clearly, it is just VERY tough material in the class. Her handwriting is good which seems rare for math teachers. She is a perfectionist when it came to grading though.

Really great teacher. Dedicated to ensuring that you UNDERSTAND Analysis. Class attendance is crucial and worth points. She assigned MOUNTAINS of homework. Weekly quizzes on definitions and proof structures. Not hard, just memorization. Exams were challenging, but her practice exams give a good indication of what would be covered. Really friendly.

Got an A- in the class. Lectures were pretty boring but gave background to do the homework. Take CLAS to help further understanding about homework, tests, etc. Overall pretty easy if you just do your homework and stay on top of things.

She was a great teacher. Showed good "real life" examples and explains well how one concept is related to another. The grading is fair. She drops the lowest midterm grade (of 3) and 2 lowest quiz grades. If you just do the hw and pay attention you should be fine. There's no surprises on tests and quizes.

This is a way boring class. Half the class didn't even come to lecture and the other half just left early. Take CLAS and you will do fine. Also, get help from the TA's. Tests aren't too hard and she has a fair grading system (she drops a midterm score and 3 homeworks).

She shows you exactly what she will test you on and all you have to do is practice it to make sure it sticks for the tests and she is good at answering questions.

She's not horrible, but not fantastic. Tests aren't curved so that kinda sucks.

MATH34A . 18 Years Ago

Explains concepts with some clarity but not enough to do the homework. Uses webwork. Not fantastic but not horrible either.. Enroll in CLAS.

Her lectures are boring, seems pointless to go. The quizzes prepares you a lot for the midterm, but just practicing midterm review or webwork doesnt prepare you for midterms and finals.Very strict professor

She wears black all the time. I don't know why. Her lectures are quite boring, I've fallen asleep a couple times. If you learned calculus before then it'll be easy. Her explanations aren't very good. But just go to section and do the homework.

I basically never went to lecture because it was a big waste of time. All you need to do is keep up on the homework and go to discussion and do the practice midterms that are in the back of the book and youll do fine.

ok long story short, shes approachable and all good but pointless, her explanations lack clarity in or outside the classroom. as testing goes, is math what were you expecting?

Go to discussion and lecture as much as possible. Sit up front and pay attention and you will do fine. Strict about grading the section quizzes, but it helps you be neater and more organized for the tests. Do the homework, and the review sheets she gives you and you'll be fine. I failed calc before and she made it so much easier to understand.

Very straight forward class. Go to lecture, do the homework, study the text book. People complain that she doesn't explain well, but that isn't true. Also, if you go to her office hours, she is really helpful!

Helena is very intelligent. You should go to every lecture and every discussion. And if you don't, you can be one of those kids complaining "she puts stuff on the test that she did not cover in class". Thats BS. She covered everything in class. I wish she did not put optimization on the final though. DO THE WORK AND YOULL BE FINE. Not an ez class.

WORST TEACHER EVER!!! She was so terrible and made me hate math. Make sure not to take a class from this her, because you won't learn anything and it's really hard. She puts stuff on the midterm that she never even goes over. I had to learn averything from CLAS.

This professor is young and inexpirenced, and it shows. It seems like she would rather be researching then teaching a class. I learned more from my TA then I did her

I ...HATED... this class. Lots of homework, hard mid-terms, and hard quizzes! In class she doesn't seem too confident sometimes, and is very bland while teaching. Try to find another professor!
