Fast lecturer, but she wants to make sure you understand. A lot of readings so I did not feel wholly engaged with any one text. 2 essays. Final not hard if you study. Some material is depressing, but not as bad as holocaust lit. I think this prof is good but would be great in a smaller setting.
She's one of UCSB's best for sure!
Best teacher at UCSB! Prof Raley is amazing though this class isn't for the faint of heart. She's very passionate and clear though you definitely need to attend lecture in order to pass the class. Exams aren't difficult but take detailed notes! Smartest person I've ever met, hands down.
Fantastic teacher and a great class. Two papers and a final, all relatively easy for a Global and English double major. Teacher was EXTREMELY well prepared and interested in the subject which made her great to listen to.
Brilliant professor. Always tries to invoke deeper thinking. Friendly and willing to listen to your opinion.
She is so cool and her class is interesting. MIDTERM: No actual midterm, but two papers. Pretty in depth, must do AT LEAST some reading. Wants you to come up with own points, not reiterate lecture FINAL: ID from the reading. Going to lecture is much more important than doing the reading. The IDs could not have been more obvious, but be in depth
Prof. Raley is amazing: brilliant, well-read, open, fun, kind, and her class will change your life. Literally. If you're afraid of facing the real world, don't take this and stick to Shakespeare. Her class encompasses English and Global Studies, among other majors. Take notes, read, show up, enjoy.
She's absolutley amazing. An English Major's dream professor. A wealth of information and reading is presented, only what's on the syllabus is tested. Grading is absolutely fair, TA's grade on whether you know it or not, no tricks.
Raley is brilliant. Her lectures are intense and thorough, but incredibly fulfilling. She tended toward theory, which can be taxing, but if you're a REAL English major it shouldn't be a problem. Tough, but worth it. Great use of other media, too (films, internet, etc.) We read Fight Club! You can't go wrong with Palahniuk in a college class.
She is the smartest person I know. I have never needed a dictionary more (since the SATs). Bring a laptop to class if you're planning on taking notes because she talks fast and everything she says is worth writing down. Also, try and get a good TA because they do all the grading for the papers. Her tests are really fair though.
One of my favorite professors at UCSB. She is extremely intelligent, and at times she said things that went over my head. But her papers/final are very reasonable, as long as you've done the reading and studied well. Her lectures are well-organized, but she says a lot so be prepared to take good notes. One of the best classes I've taken.
i personally thought she was amazing. her lectures were outstanding, insightful, and funny, and she couldn't be more reasonable with papers & the final. she's hot too. i agree that the ta adrienne was awful and only there because she had to be; that being the only drawback to this class....but overall, prof. raley justified my tuition fees..rare!!

the class started out bright, but died down towards the end. there were two short papers (fair enough), no midterm and a take-home essay (with some short answer questions in class) for the final. it could have been more interesting (i dozed off a few days) and raley could talk a little slower. we read one graphic novel, which was nice.

i fully agree with the previous post. raley seems to be amazingly smart and full of interesting cultural insight. she's so well-informed, articulate, and knows her**** about politics, technology, foreign affairs, etc. hard, but brilliant...good sense of humor too...adrienne the TA is nuts...kind of unhelpful...
An insanely intelligent professor. She moves quickly through lecture, but has very interesting insight into the text. Highly recommended.
yappity ****ing yapp....overtly deep for the sake of nothingness
the best ****ing teacher in the english department. articulate, inspiring, good dresser and enjoys a good beer.
