do not take this class. just save yourself. he does not explain anything
Unclear grading criteria, unorganized lectures, dont feel like I have a better understanding of content than I did before. Grade is based on 3 papers (one dropped). 5 books assigned but I only read two of them and I was fine.
Best professor I've had. He is knowledgeable on the topics he teaches and is very passionate about them! Took 100 & 169 and for both, there were 5 books to read over the quarter & you're graded on 3 papers. Class is discussion-based, no fluff work. He cares about his students and grants extensions with no questions asked. Take his class!!
McAuley is by far the most accommodating professor I've had during remote learning and goes out of his way to help bolster your final grade. Your grade is based on your performance on 3 papers that correspond with the 5 assigned books the readings are really engrossing, so you'll get a lot out of the class even if you're not an avid reader!
McAuley is a great professor! His lectures are interesting and interactive so you won't be bored. The class is graded on three papers and section attendance, so if you write thoughtful papers, you'll do well. The books we read are very insightful and easy to read (even enjoyable). I recommend this class for sure.
Prof. McAuley is passionate about Caribbean studies. The class has a lot of books to read, but lectures aren't mandatory to attend, but are interesting and can help you better understand the books.
One of my favorite professors! He is hilarious and charming. I got nervous after seeing the syllabus but somehow I managed to get an A and I did miss class a few times. Mostly graded on your papers and it's a turn in essay final. I had trouble reading all the books but everyone skimmed and did well.
This will be my third class with Chris, and there aren't enough words to describe how much I love his classes. If class discussions is something that helps you learn, then his course is great. He is super approachable and really values the relationships he has with students. I would definitely suggest taking any of his classes!
one of my favorite professors at UCSB ! you can get an A as long as you do the readings. attendance not mandatory, but i enjoyed lecture. he an interesting lecturer but occasionally shows movies that were not tested on. He assigns interesting books and I learned a lot!
He was super chill. His lectures were interesting because he could just go off on tangents which were usually interesting, but he would generally answer students questions. He was pretty funny too. Definitely would take more classes from him.
Professor McAuley is extremely well informed and an amazing lecturer. The class is graded through section participation and papers so lectures are not mandatory but he is fascinating to listen to. Highly recommend this class for McAuley makes the material interesting and easy to grasp.
Pretty much ghosted this class and got an A-. Your grade is based on three papers which themselves are based entirely on books you read outside of class -- there's absolutely no need to go to lecture. No tests either. Take this class if you need the GE and if you're a decent writer. The class must be taken for a letter grade.
Prof shows up 5-10 min late each time, answers questions re: readings if ppl have them, sometimes gives brief lecture, sometimes movie/guest speaker, go home early. Turn in 3 papers--can pretty much be summary--get an easy A. I skimmed the reading, still got As on essays. No exams. Recommended if you don't care about learning material, cool Prof.
I literally love this guy. I have taken a class with him before and will take a class with him in the fall. His lectures are amazing and interactive. It's like an informal conversation. There is a lot of reading but he guides you though it. 2/3 papers but nothing too painful. One of the best at UCSB. I would need more characters to brag about him
McAuley is very knowledgeable and experienced. I felt that he treated us as if we graduate students and graded us harshly. His lectures can get quite boring since his voice is unenthusiastic and he doesn't use slides. He is extremely unclear about his grading criteria (he has none) and is late when getting assignments back to you.
McAuley is a very nice and down-to-earth professor -- he connects what he teaches to real-life experiences, but he is also able to relate on a personal level with all of his students in the class. He tries to memorize names, and picks out good books to read. Tough essay grader, doable A if you put in the effort.
So Chris is my favorite professor I have had at the university so far; I am an engineering major too! He engages in conversation with the students and has no set lectures in the course, we simply meet and talk about the books assigned and anything students want to talk about that day. It's an easy B if you just participate and be real with him.
Prof. McAuley is an awesome professor and seems to know everything. He makes you think outside the box, I really learned a lot from every lecture. He expects a lot of reading, which is generally pretty interesting. Overall great class and great prof.
Lectures are great and we watched a few movies. Lectures help with writing the 3 papers your grade is made up of. TAs are okay but can be tough graders. Great GE
Read 7 books throughout the quarter, 3 of which we had to write analytical essays. No midterm or final, grade solely based on weekly section assignments and essays. Interesting, engaging lectures and all-around amazing lecturer; very clear and helpful and passionate
McAuley is very personable & gives great lectures to support relevant themes. The class was less stressful than others due to just three papers (no midterm or final). However, bc papers are graded by TA's, it is more helpful to discuss topics with them as opposed to professor. Do the reading and put thought into essays in order to do well
Material and lecture seem easy .Lecture isn't mandatory and all the professor does is have a discussion with the class. 3 papers. No final or midterm. Concepts of the papers are fair until you get them back. TAs grade papers very hard for no reason. Don't take for a GE. Average paper scores were Cs. Letter graded class only.
Chris' lectures are always full of energy and expertise. Many lectures are spent watching docu's, so that it's not always just listening to him which is a good alternation. He's open for questions - but it's also necessary to participate, so if you want to sit back and just listen his lecture's are not for you! (he appreciates all answers though)
lecture is pointless. 3 essays. section is mandatory so go.
