He is a horrible teacher - VERY unorganized and misleading in regards to preparing for exams. He doesn't want students to memorize, rather to "intuitively" understand the concepts. YOU NEED TO MEMORIZE EVERYTHING. No clear course structure -uploads reading material a few times a week. He never posts quiz scores to GS. Be ready to teach yourself.
Lew is friendly and cares for his students but IMO was not the best teacher. His in-class analogies just don't help (some are good), he tries to oversimplify complicated systems to one statement he'll tell you to write down, and often lectures past the end of class. I'd say he could spend less time emphasizing points. Sections and hw help a lot!
he was bad.
Best professor in college by far. Dr. Lew made class interesting by challenging students to understand the big picture of metabolism before filling in the gaps. He is a great lecturer that engages his students and thus makes class enjoyable. He provides weekly problems to help students understand the concept. His midterm and final is fair!
my favorite professor thus far. really cares about his students and wants them to succeed. do problem sets and GO TO OFFICE HOURS, even just to meet him because he's great. his exams are definitely not easy but if you keep up and do what he recommends you will be fine
USELESS. Maybe people like him because he's easy and kind of funny, but i learned everything out of the book to get an A. He makes you tell stories about biochem that have to be exactly how he wants them, he sells you biochem instead of teaching it, and he tells you not to memorize when you actually need to memorize everything.
Great teacher, really entertaining. I would go to class since his lecture slides don't make much sense unless they're explained. His midterm was easy, but long, so be prepared. His final was incredibly involved - you need to incorporate everything from the entire quarter (it took about 4 hours). He's very fair, and wants his students to do well
The class itself is not too difficult. If you run out of time for studying, I would definitely recommend just going over problem sets that he has online. They appear almost word for word on his exams. TIME is a huge constraint in his class when taking exams, so know the material well. Lew is a really good guy, and easy to talk to.
One of the best teachers in the MCDB department. do the problem sets! will appear on the midterms and finals. when he says don't memorize, ur going to have to memorize. really helpful, see him in office hours. he's good at remembering names. 1 midterm 33% and final 66%. really fair tests, not easy but not extremely hard. take this class!
here's how to get an A: for the midterm, do ALL of the problem sets, because they'll show up on the midterm... VERBATIM. final: problem sets + everything else. it's long, i stayed 4 hours... be prepared, or u'll loose the easy A u got on the midterm. he's very helpful at office hours, and know his reader inside and out, no need for lehinger.
unclear lecture notes. full of surprises and not a good study of biochemistry. Final exam was VERY long and worth about 67% of the grade. I got a b- on the midterm, but got the final grade of A-... Still don't think he was good.
Very Interesting class, the best class I have ever taken @ UCSB
Do Lew's problem sets. At least you know you can get these right on the midterm and final. Hard to put concepts together because his reader is very scattered, but most put a lot of time and effort to do well in his class.
he is very good and funny... materials in this class r very interesting(if u r intersted in exercise stuff). only get to take one midterm and the final...however, final was pretty hard and extremely long, so be prepared (midterm was fairly easy)
Interesting and useful material. He can be VERY tricky on exams. Do problem sets, see him at his office hours. I advise not memorizing the material but to actually integrate and connect EVERYTHING. Tough but very interesting
Lew's a really nice guy and he made the class interesting, unlike 108A with Sears. You HAVE to do the problems sets to do well on the exam.
