Prof Fruhstuck's lectures are average. She doesn't add much words to her slides so be prepared to listen to everything she has to say. The readings she assigns weren't that boring but she assigns so much that it stacks onto the Chinese readings and it can get hard to be on track. If thinking of taking 4b for a GE, don't.

Being a research assistant w/ Prof. for a term as a freshman, the project was very interesting and reasonably easy given consideration to my class level, prof was a little busy some days but super accessible and friendly, and willing to help. She wrote me an (I think strong) recommendation for transfer. Really appreciate such an opportunity!

Prof Fruhstuck is responsible for the Japan part of the course, and her lectures are awful, extremely unclear, and it is really difficult to follow. The content she chose to lecture on are not interesting, and her slides are unclear.

She might be a nice person, but this class was awful. The grading rubric for papers was not clear and she expect you to analyze things very thoroughly in 500-word essays. You must answer or ask questions every single class to earn participation/attendance grades, which was not mentioned in the syllabus at all.

Fruhstuck is a very kind and openminded person, and she's very accommodating. This course consists of mandatory attendance & participation in discussion, leading a discussion, and a final essay (500 words).Lots of reading! I am very introverted and this class helped me get out of my comfort zone in a good way. Do the work and you'll be fine.

This class is AWFUL. No matter what DO NOT take EACS4B with this professor. There are weekly responses, forum discussions, and notes. Notes are GRADED weekly and points are taken off if you do not write what is expected, but also not allowed to write verbatim. 100pg+ of readings weekly. It is way too much busywork. Lectures are extremely dry

Best prof at UCSB! She really knows her stuff and her lectures are never boring! There's no textbook and I never really found it necessary to read assigned articles. Make sure you attend every lecture since 95% of her test material is lecture based!! Write notes on a laptop- she goes fast sometimes. Write down what she says about images or events!

If you go to class and section its the easiest A you can get. Fruhstuck really knows what she is talking about and is a very pleasant/interesting lecturer. Highly recommend to cover any GEs

SO MUCH READING. SO MUCH SUFFERING

I wasn't completely expecting to be interested in the subject, (as I took for a GE), but Prof. Fruhstuck made it extremely engaging. There are somewhat lengthy reading assignments and written responses every week. Stay on top of those, attend lectures, participate if you can, and you'll be fine. Highly recommend this class and this professor.

Extremely informative class, moderate difficulty level that was satisfying to complete

The class is interesting and the lecturer is engaging and quite nice if you put the effort in. However, there were weekly writing assignments and a lot of reading. I did really well in everything that I got grades returned for so I think that my mark may have been scaled down. There were several extra credit assignments that I did not do.

If you do the readings and participate in discussion you will get the easiest A of your life. She doesn't want people who will be sitting there not participating and not interested. So if modernity in Japan is at all of interest to you and you want a class that has 60% of its grade in participation take this class!!!!!

If you have a sense of humor, you'll appreciate her jokes. Attend lecture because most of her slides are just photos. Very interesting class. She's very helpful if you ask her questions. Overall, I really like this professor.

She has a European accent and says "idea" "ideeur" a LOT. she favors japanese students. she doesnt like americans but says that americans have a nice culture. everytime she talks about the country of Japan, she refers it to "us" or "my" as if she was from Japan (which shes not....) the class is kind of boring and repeats herself. easy class though

Thought the class would be interesting, but turned out to mainly focus on period between WWI and WWII. Teacher was REALLY condescending. Didn't tie readings to lecture at all. Tests were easy; when she gave examples of questions "similar" to those on the test, they were the exact ones that appeared on the test. Don't bother unless you need the GE.

such an interesting class! i went to all but one lecture and enjoyed them. tests were straightforward and graded very leniently. attendance in lecture is crucial for the tests and i strongly recommend reading the reader. she gives a study guide with all the test questions, so if you study, you'll get an a.

she says "uh" a lot in between her sentences. She knows a lot about Japan, but sometimes loses me because it can be a little boring sometimes.

First off... WHAT A HOTTIE! (she makes me want 2b a lesbian) Anywho, the class is kinda hard cause there is a lot of reading & you really gotta keep up or u will get lost. The tests are pretty hard too, but will be fine as long as you study for it. I found the material 2b very very interesting and made the class extra enjoyable.

material isn't hard to grasp nor are the midterm/final but the 2 page response papers are a killer. its ridiculuous how she and her TA deducts nearly 10-20% off your essay grade for slight grammatical errors!!

This was an easy class. Her lectures can get to be a bit on the boring side, but the material is really interesting. The midterm is pretty easy if you study, and the paper is really easy to pull off as well.

The teacher expects everybody who writes the essays with perfect gramma and structure although she is not a native english speaker who doesnt have perfect english. Her exams were fair but not the essay parts. If you have one gramma mistake, she takes off 1/3 of your points on your paper.
