She is the best literature professor on campus! She is so intelligent and funny. Her style of teaching is a meeting of minds. She gives everyone a chance to participate in the conversation. She wants you to understand the material and think outside the box. There isn't much work outside of reading, critical thinking and one term paper.
There was no prerequisite for this class, but there should have been. She was always having side conversations with students in Portuguese, leaving everyone else feeling disadvantaged and left out. Also we had to buy a textbook but never used it. She knows her stuff but can make you feel out of place if you don't have background knowledge already
She is amazing! Very brilliant and knowledgable. She assigns interesting and meaningful texts. Her classes are best if taken without a TA. She grades on content, and nothing else. If you attend class and listen to everything she talks about, you will learn tons of very interesting things not only about Literature, but about the world.

On her syllabus she notes: "You will get out what you put into this class." This is very true; she is extremely intelligent and she knows her literature. Take this class only if you are willing to put time and effort, 8 full texts were assigned for the quarter. And pay attention to her trippy terms.
She does not have planned lectures, that means no slides or powerpoint. Just an overhead and a pen and she lectures off the top of her head BUT she has written books about the topics she teaches so she is well informed, however she gives too much background information about the author, and not enough about the text.
This professor is a trip.
Easy class, few students which is good. We only get to participate during class, give a presentation on a chosen topic and write a final paper on anything discussed in class.
The teacher is hilarious. But take her class only if you are really serious about learning brazilian literature, because you will be required to turn in written assignments (in portuguese) every once in a while. But overall she is very easy going, available for help during her office hours or emails and she is easy to give A's too.
Elide is one of the best literature teacher I ever had in life. Although I was educated in the Portuguese language, I learned more during her classes than when I was still living in SoAmerica. Elide is fun and outgoing and you will have a great time with her. I would totally recommend her class.
Premature ejaculations, eh? I hated this class the whole quarter and still have the notion that while brilliant Oliver is a horrible teacher. Yes the class was interesting and I probably got an A, but I did NOT want Freud, Hoffman, Cicero, Dante, CHAUCER for a lit of the Americas class. Screw that.
Literature of the americas does not mean american literature, idiot. The class was excellent, the ideas obviously beyond the premature ejaculations of the prior two ratings, then again, they rated the professor after only a week. Is that a sign of intelligence? This class blew my mind.
I thought that this class was supposed to be about American literature, but there was not one american writer on the sylabus. Oliver has a cool accent and really knows what she is talking about. Then TA's are really helpful too.
This class has been anything but what the catalogue says. Oliver is arrogant, elusive, random in her lectures, and highly unclear as to what we will actually be learning. I am VERY unhappy with this class and especially this professor. My TA is the saving grace, because she makes it interesting.
