Lectures were extremely unorganized, would essentially just be her reading off of a paper the entire time (it was almost as if it wasn't her own writing either??). TAs tried their best to help, but tests were so extremely specific that you'd have to basically transcribe what the professor was saying during lectures to do well.
Disorganized lectures and the quizzes are so specific that you'll fail unless you have a photographic memory. Would never recommend to another student.
By far the least engaging class and lecturer Ive had during my time here. The class is shown photos while she reads endless text off of a paper for an hour. She seems like a nice woman but the class is a total snooze.
She is just a great professor that makes me want to major in art history! I wish i wasn't trasnferring so i could take more of her classes
She is just a great professor that makes me want to major in art history!
her lectures were more useful and important than the readings. she's very nice and enthusiastic about the topic. i'd recommend her class!
this class was pretty easy. everything from the lectures to the test was pretty straightforward... as someone else mentioned, all you really need to know is the IDs and you're set to go!
went into this class expecting it to be boring, but prof. vilander proved me wrong! i was actually almost sad when the quarter ended, as there was so much more i wanted to learn. everything you will need to know is in the lectures, so i wouldn't bother reading the book!
I LOVED this class. It was really really interesting and the environment was really good. Professor is really nice and it was semi-easy and not a stress to learn
I didn't know what to expect at first, but the class turned out to b very interesting. I wouldve payed more attention if the class wasnt at 8AM! Go to discussions, my TA helped me a LOT to understand the material. Don't buy the book, i didn't even open it, just go to lectures, take notes, review them, listen to what ur TA has to say & u'll be fine.
She is such a great professor who really cares about her students and is willing to help you out in any way possible. Her tests are no problem if you attend lecture, you don't even have to read the book although it is interesting too... the paper is really easy too. It gets you interested in photography and it was one of my favorite classes!
Dr. V really knows her stuff and her tests are pretty straight forward. Paper's pretty easy and she's willing to answer any questions. However, the book is really encyclopedic which kinda sucks and it can get a bit boring especially if the class is at 8am.
Vilander is amazing! Very interesting lecturer, great material. I had no prior knowledge of photography before this class. Exams are straight forward, she genuinely wants everyone to do well. I would absolutely take another class with her again! I would highly recommend this course.
awesome teacher! loved her, can't wait to take her again. very well prepared lectures, explains what you need to know for exams, posts important images on website. extremely helpful outside of class too. such a nice person and a great teacher! highly reccommend her class.
As long as you memorize the slide id's then this class should be no problem! Easy paper and Vilander is awlways willing to help and answer any questions
this is a pretty easy class. lectures can be a little boring, but the paper was pretty easy and the tests were nothing to stress about. a great way to fill an arts requirement.

Vilander is amazing. I have taken 3 of her classes for my art history major and if you are looking for a seminar to take, her photography one is awesome! very straightforward and easy, 2 short papers and you had to do short presentations on each, but she makes you very comfortable. I would even recommend her to non-ARTHI majors, you'll learn a lot.
this class was great, thats if you enjoy photography. she was very clear in lectures, and her exams are WAY easy. memorize the photographer and year, and then do analysis on chosen photographs, which is subjective, so you cant really be wrong. a great class, and much worth taking.
I really liked this professor. She made class fun and she didn't like to load students down with a bunch of reading. Her tests were different. She experimented with different formats. You really have to take good notes with her. And she's really helpful, so don't be afraid to ask her anything.
Prof. Vilander is my favorite instuctor. She know her subject material extremely well and presents the slides in a fun way. She also has the best quotes ever, "now don't get too haired out..." I recommend highly for any one who has a marginal interest in photography, I promise you will love it afterwards.
WONDERFUL, INTERESTING class! Somehow not boring looking at slides, accompanied by anecdotes about artist. 2 tests and a paper/project. Tests are very straightforward -- she gives you a study guide w/ EXACTLY what you need to know for the test. Test made up of slide IDs and 3 essays (compare/contrast). Fair grader. Overall good class - def.rec
This is a pretty cool class. Lectures can get boring, but if you really like photography you'll appreciate it more. For the tests you have to memorize a lot but also know a LOT of background info for essay questions about each picture you memorize so you DO have to read and go to lecture and section. But not too hard.
Great professor. Very interesting lectures and her exams were very fair. Only 1 short writing assignment for the quarter. HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
