This is a computer science class, not an English class. You learn about computer markup language and other things like that. The tests aren't awful but the reading is so much you will fall behind and that makes the tests hard, because if you don't read you won't get anything right
While Alan is a really sweet guy and is really passionate about this field, his class was very unexpected. I enrolled thinking it was going to just be another english class but it felt more like computer science and not related to literature whatsoever. Also assigned too many readings, I gave up on trying to keep up by the third week.
Professor Liu obviously cares, but the class is so boring that nobody else does. He is a decent professor, but a lot of the time I leave lecture feeling like I've taken nothing away
Prof. Liu's class is perhaps the best teaching example for STEM majors that English classes are not as easy as they think. Most of my class took it pass/no pass as the course work was pretty difficult. The course material is very complex (mostly theoretical and scientific), but surprisingly the grading was extremely forgiving.
Professor Liu moves through lecture slides soon quickly and never actually tells you what you should take away from each reading. Thus, the final was filed with obscure questions about specific concepts within the readings. Also, I went to OH and my TA gave me some feedback and I did it and I still only got a B+ because she did not tell me all ofit
I went to almost every Office hours for the essays and they DO NOT HELP YOU. I have had multiple people ask me if the class I was working on was a computer science course, because it is actually 75% computer science and 25% English with a TON of reading. The midterm is extremely easy, and the Liu told us it would be same structure WHICH IT WAS NOT.
Please Please Please for your own sake DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. This is without a doubt the HARDEST class I have ever taken (and I have taken calculus before). Every single essay prompt is ONE SENTENCE LONG and EXTREMELY VAGUE. You can do all of the readings and understand all of them and still fail the final. Nothing in this course aligns.
Not enjoyable.
This Professor is very hard when it comes to grading your papers. And he will bust you for plagiarism at the hardest level-- no joke!
This guy was awesome! His lectures were really intersting, the reading was great, the assignments were great, and he was very appraochable and ehlpful. I deffinately recommend this guy.
A brilliant scholar and compelling teacher. It's a privilege to be in his seminar. Helps you see the world in a new way.
