He is terrible at lecturing but the homework prepares you well for the exams. I wouldn't have gone to class if there wasn't an IClicker because his lectures are unhelpful. The tests were challenging but straightforward if you studied the material and did the homework. Not a bad class, but try avoiding Moore if possible.
Lectures were terribly monotone and useless. He would constantly state "This is easy, you should be done by now" Really brought down the morale of students that were struggling in this course, cause overall it wasn't that difficult. Just read the lecture slides, go for iClicker and sign up for CLAS. PS Textbook is horrid
Moore was the worst prof I've had so far at UCSB. He's so smart that his lectures are not understandable to his students. He would stand in front of a powerpoint and talk in monotone about complex math ideas. Even when half the lecture gets an I-clicker problem wrong, he sometimes doesn't even go over it. He could teach well but he has no effort.
He is the sweet heart in terms of exams. Midterms are quite simple; half of the final is directly from the midterm and iclicker(lazy haa). Lectures are long and useless; just go there, play with your cell phone, go back and read all the ppt he posted on line and you'll be fine. Not hard materials. Sometimes hw can be a burden but not that bad.
Doug Moore is a horrible teacher with tenure up the wazoo. He makes simple topics complicated, is inconsistent in the way he explains things (changing variables randomly? really???), and insists that that his iclickers are "easy" or "simple"... and then only 20% of the class will get it right. He's a genius, but NOT a teacher. Avoid, avoid AVOID!
He is a smart and intelligent man, but he does not know how to teach. He always says that everything should be easy or elementary when half the class are getting the iclicker questions wrong.
Absolutely horrible. Worst math professor I've ever taken at UCSB. NEVER responds to any email. TA was even worse, both never responded to any emails and left missing quizzes which dropped my grade significantly. Supposed to be an easy class, but HORRIBLE professor. Avoid...
Clearly a smart man, but he is disorganized and can't always explain things clearly. Test questions are from homework, but sometimes asked in a different way. Some of the multiple choice questions are ridiculously long and are worth as much as the ones that take almost no time at all.
His tests aren't that bad, but the 'describe the shape of this graph' multiple choice questions always got me. Gives quizes weekly in lecture and section, and they are pretty tricky, sometimes harder than the midterms. Just do HW problems to study for exams, and any practice tests he gives you, that's what you'll see on the tests.
Tests are really easy To bad he is such a horrible teacher that w/o CLAS you wont understand a thing in lecture. He teaches on ppt and half the stuff he teaches is stuff that doesnt even relate to the class The only reason why anyone even shows up to class is b/c he has pop quizzes Take CLAS and youll be fine if u dont may god have mercy on ur soul
Pros: Tests are easy. everything on tests can be pulled straight from the hw, so if you understand the hw you are golden. Cons: Bad lecturer but CLAS helps a ton, quizzes in lecture almost every week. Can be very difficult to follow if you are not a "math person."
The professor teaches everything with an old format. It is obvious that he has not taught a lower division course before in a significant amount of time. On his tests, the professor will have a written and a multiple choice section. The written is doable with proper study, but the multiple choice is often on questions not covered in class.
Professor Moore is probably one of the better professors I have had at UCSB. If you go to class, study the handouts, and attend office hours you are very likely to get an A. Only A+ I have had here thus far.
He is very clear in his explanations and every single question on the midterm and final were straight out of either quizzes or handouts. Pay attention and go to class and you'll do fine.
It was hard to pay attention in class, partially because it was at 8am. He has such a monotone voice that it is hard to keep your interest. He likes to give pop quizzes after his lecture to see if you were paying attention so make sure not to fall asleep. The tests aren't that difficult if you study.
he's senile. go to lecture on the off-chance he mentions something random to put in the test. about 70% of his questions are reasonable but then the other 30% can mess you up if you're shooting for that A. random and unexpected. if you want the A, know all the concepts in the book EVEN if it's not on ur homework, and you'll be fine.
Maybe he is better at teaching higher level math classes, but this was the worst math class I've ever taken. Lectures consisted of 17+ overhead pages of text, and he would lose his train of thought halfway through the few examples he presented. Usually he blocked the projector while working through examples. Awful!
he gave too many pop quizzes and hw, especially compared to the other 3c section this quarter, but he did make the material slightly easier to understand and he at least tried to be funny.
Difficult to know what he's saying because he keeps emphasizing definitions over examples. To make this worse, the book doesn't go over many good examples. GO TO CLAS AND MATH LAB or there's a high chance you would have no idea what you're doing.
For upper division math moore is one of the best. If you are interested in the subject/want to really learn, moore will do an excellent job of putting the material in context. His assessment is easy-he gives a practice quiz and then gives the exact same problems on exams. He is helpful outside of class and has a broad understanding of higher math.
I got an A+ and skipped 7 weeks of class. He is terrible, and goes on tangents instead of teaching the material, so your best chance is to skip class and read the book.
Terrible. Avoid at all costs.
Agree with everything said before. Again, he encourages participation in class and has a good attitude. Knows what he's talking about.
Took this during summer, really easy when you do the homework. A lot easier of a class than Math 5B. He welcomes any questions during class so speak up or your confusion will remain. His tests are non-trivial and will only pull from subjects taught.
