Not designed well for students from Chinese 1-6. This class combines NH students with the 1-6 and is very obviously tailored toward the needs of the NH students. This leaves the 1-6 kids behind and there is not extra accommodation to fix the discrepancy between fluency among students. The class itself is fine but the homework content isn't taught.
Prof. Guan is incredibly caring & he's an engaging lecturer. Attendance is mandatory since it's part of your grade. It's relatively easy to do well in the class. I enjoyed going to class since he always tells fun anecdotes!
Best professor in UCSB
The best Chinese teacher in UCSB. All of my classmates love him so much!
He is literally so sweet and kind. I lowkey stopped going to class and even though I skipped class for a month I still am doing well because he lets you make up basically everything even if the syllabus says no and doesnt give you a hard time. Hes a very pleasant presence to be around and is very laidback.
Ive taken Chinese 1-3 with Guan Laoshi. Hes a very kind and flexible professor and the class was very reasonable. A short HW assignment everyday and a longer assignment and quiz every two weeks.
Reminds me of my grandpa, super chill, easy class, easy A. Big GPA booster. Go to class cause attendance is worth a lot.
Tries very hard to accommodate all of his students and is a great professor! All the professors I've had in the Chinese department have been fantastic, and Professor Guan is no exception. Ask questions and attend class and should do fine in the class.
Lenient but very helpful; pull your own weight and show him that you want to learn, and he will be understanding. Questions are answered clearly and he gives lots of cultural background to help you understand more about what your are learning.
Really great guy, and an amazing teacher. That being said, if you dont show up youll fail for sure... one of my friends did. Grading is lenient, and they really want you to do well.
Really great teacher. I graduated in 2010 and told myself I'd rate him but never got around to it. Thank you Guan Laoshi for all the great lessons. I went to China and really learned everything he taught me. Chinese is the best language to learn.
This dude is soo chill. He has major smoker's lung though. Other than that he'll buy you coffee if you hang out with him during office hours and he is SOOO incredibly nice and forgiving even for the most ridiculous problems.
Guan is nice and very helpful. His class is always interesting. I have learned a lot!
fairly predictable tests... will be fine if you pay attention in class. homework assignments are easy. basically, its a chilled class with fun people.
The man is rad. I went China with him on his Nanjing program three summers ago and it was one of the best times of my life. Very soft spoken but approachable. Possibly the nicest prof. at UCSB.
Guan is awesome. The classes are predictable, but in a good way. Seriously one of the funniest professors I've ever had. Way chill and helpful.
He's so funny. All assignments are predictable, and he is very helpful. Very fun class.
Awesome professor.

Very smart and nice
Awesome professor.
Very nice teacher! Even though he's not clear 100% of the time, he is patient and nice when explaining. I think he is an awesome teacher and a great person!
This guy is ??? you never know what he is thinking. Better than the other chinese professors. Aside from being unpredictable he is pretty nice guy. Has a bias towards girls. Maybe its because he has a daughter who goes to Caltech. YOu can tell he loves his family very much.
he dropped me(enrolled)and rest of the guys(trying to add)out after placement test(we knew most answers)and let girls (who did worse than us) add his class (even called my friend to ask her if she wants to add after she failed the test),i knew because these guys&girls r my friends, watchout crashers
