This professor is incredibly friendly but this course was extremely boring and long. There are weekly writing assignments which were graded fairly difficult because he hires a grader that is not associated with the school. The midterm and final are both essays based on the readings and films. You will be called on in some class discussions.
Bloom is okay, he is very boring though. You must show up and do the in class assignments and do the readings cause you'll be using things from the book in essays. Make sure you cite properly, and stay on top of things. He is nice when you talk with him outside class, but his class boring. Do good on the midterm and final paper, you should be good.
Not sure how Bloom was years ago (considering the low ratings) but my experience with him was solid! He's actually kind of hilarious and honestly cares about film theory. Lectures were a bit slow, but we did group presentations every week which were honestly very fun and helpful. Midterm was essay questions and Final was a group presentation.
Peter is a great guy, he's knowledgeable & he's passionate. He does care, but a STICKLER for revisions & MUST be in class unless there's a MAJOR EMGY! I had a family vacation, requested 2 weeks prior for a Monday makeup, he wanted me in class to watch a weird redundant movie with no dialogue; just music I could have watched in a hotel on laptop.
Three screenings per week, over ten weeks for about 30 total screenings. Attendance is taken at every screening by writing and turning in responses to the screenings. Several dense articles to read every week. The midterm is a 10-page take home essay. The research paper is also 10 pages. The final is a mix of take home and in class, about 6 pages.
If you want feedback on your papers before you turn them in, you will be told to go to office hours to review things you have previously written and the comments on those. Forget getting answers to your questions about assignments as well. You get the most roundabout answer that will leave you more unsure than before you asked the question.
Two words: BUSY WORK. three more words: SO MUCH READING.
He really knows what he's talking about and cares that you understand the material. His lectures are fairly interesting and he likes to talk to students. Really cool guy! Unfortunately, he gives tons of assignments and you're always reading for this class.
Really great person and genuinely cares about his students but SOOO much reading and unnecessary busy work. Had him for 187IR as well, the longest most dense reading assignments and the seminars were pretty boring.
Way too much reading and he's very boring. His teaching is very discouraging and like everyone else he assigns a lot of boring and tedious assignments. I wouldn't recommend him, but if you do HAVE to take one of his classes.. sorry.
Very Boring.
Also had him for 189EV. Really nice guy and funny but gives way too much reading. Lectures are all over the place and are hard to take notes on. Mostly just asks what you thought. Attend lectures bc of quizzes. 70% for your name. Extremely boring material. Avoid him if you can. But he is a cool guy outside of the classroom.
Class is pretty friggin boring, but he's really nice! He makes weirdly hilarious jokes. Gives 5 random quizzes, but 70 points just for writing your name, and sometimes he announced them beforehand. Also gives study guides but theyre crazy long. He's really happy and helpful if you go to office hours. I almost never watched any films and got an A-.
This was the French film class. Most of the films were good. The instructor is highly knowledgeable, but rather boring, and is a true academic tyrant when it comes to assignments...they will kill your weekend. Overall grade of this professor: C-
Nice guy, extremely boring. This is a class where you can start out being so awake that nothing could make your eyes droop and five minutes in - BAM! You're out. I fell asleep so many times...I still managed a B. Large work load, felt the lectures didn't help at all. I couldn't write any notes because it felt like he wasn't saying anything.
I have no idea what went on in this class. Teacher is witty but the subject matter is just plain boring. Can't blame the guy for teaching a topic such as his. Not very clear most of the time and has a lot of work piled up. I was lost most of the quarter in his class.
If you do your work you'll do fine, don't expect to slack. Lenient, supportive, and easy-going. The subject isn't the most interesting, but he does a good job at making it bearable. Tests are hard but a breeze with the study guide.
Worst teacher ever! Only made it through because I struggled with friends.

The class itself was alright, films were kind of boring sometimes and there's really no lecture, just a discussion. No work other than the written assignments.
boring
funny guy. take his class. ;)
great professor!! unintentionally funny and very knowledgeable, highly recommend.
Easier if you take it with friends
