Favorite class at ucsb so far! Very interesting material. No powerpoint so must attend class and take detailed notes. Also it is important to study the reader and really understand the relationships.
Took him last year for eemb 156, it was a lot harder than expected, lecture seemed simple and straight forward, but really tests you on the key concepts and relationships of what he says, and the readings in the text down to the last detail. Got a C.
This class is pretty hard, please think twice before taking. Many people I know did end up dropping before the withdrawal date. 3 tests + final, cumulative and memorize about 70 slides each lecture + read text.
I have a 3.7 gpa, but somehow this seemed easy during lecture but his tests were a hardcore surprise! MC + Short answer and detailed paragraphs explaining the process of the mechanisms. Only take if you want to memorize every slide + read text. Good Luck!
Took him in Fall. Horrible, didn't explain well, and went too fast in lecture. I had to study 10 - 15 hours in a week for this class and ended up with a C+. I also went to office hours but he felt like he didn't want to answer any of my questions. Exams are hardcore.
He's super sweet and funny in office hours. I really enjoyed taking this course, there's a lot of information to know but it's a fascinating subject. Professor Collins is a great professor, I would recommend sitting in the front because he speaks so softly. If you take good notes and read everything in the reader you will be fine!
I'm going to miss this class, honestly one of the most easiest and simplest classes in the science department. To me this class was like a simple jigsaw puzzle. Everything relates to everything so nothing is really confusing. Show up to class, memorize simple facts, and take notes You don't really need the reader, but you have to take good notes
The only way to pass this class is to attend lectures and sit in the front. In lecture, write down every textbook page and reader page that he presents down and know them. Uses a projector and speaks softly, even with a mic, so its hard to get information from the back. The notes from lecture and the figures will be all you need to know for tests.
The material is very interesting and enjoyed the class, but the tests are incredibly difficult and it is impossible to know what to study. The reader in text have so much material, it's impossible to know what you do and do not need to know.
His lectures are very dry and pretty boring. His lectures go pretty slow and he doesn't cover a lot of information but when it comes to the tests you dont know what to study, the book and reader is a lot of information and very in depth, the opposite of lecture and he only tests on what he lectures which seems like noting. Just go to section!
Easy class for an upper div science. prof is old english guy with accent, kinda funny. draws on board every class, slow pace. 1/3 midterm, 2/3 final is whole grade. tests are MC, TF, and matching.
This guy should retire. Doesn't seem like he gives two a ishes about this class and teaching it. let the TA take over. Didn't think it was possible to make such a fascinating subject SO intolerable and boring. He should stay in the lab as he clearly can't and doesn't want to teach. I just wanted to get this class over with. And final is ridiculous.
Awesome prof, a lil old dry english humor but learned a lot, plus the TA Anastasia was super hot!!!! and super smart. Take the class you ll love it!
i loved this class, it was very interesting. i am a bio major and this class is definitely easy and slow paced compared to all my other ud bio classes. you can actually keep up and the material is interesting, you can actually apply it to everyday life. He uses the chalkboard and colored chalk to draw diagrams to it is super easy to understand.
Very slow and old fashioned. Not very clear about what exactly we should be studying. But a nice guy, and not a bad class compared to other MCDB and EEMB classes.
The class was very interesting and I would reccommend taking it. The TA, Peter Chaille was extremely knowledgable, however the exams were pretty difficult since there was so much material that was covered in lecture.
I took this class over the summer, and it was all about the TA Peter Chaille. The material is pretty interesting, if you're into that sort of thing. Exams were fair...the majority was from the lectures.
very boring, monotone voice, nice guy but not a great professor
I highly recommend this class, the material is interesting (reproduction) the tests are very straight forward. Collins is awesome! He is an older British guy with a dry sense of humor that really grows on you. I wish he taught another class!
