She was alright but not great. Course definitely leaned left even for a public university. TA matters a lot with a wide range of grading toughness between them.
Mandatory lectures: write-ins required. She is clearly very knowledgeable, but I rarely stayed awake. The content leans Democratic. Sections have too much discussion. All exams are in-person blue book. The final is harder than the midterm. Not an easy GE for international students.
Expect to read often. Lectures were incredibly informative and I enjoyed the professor's passion on the subject. Tests can be kind of difficult if you didn't read all the readings in detail, but spend a good amount of time on the course and you'll be okay.
very passionate and great lectures but her wording of questions for exams, participation questions, and papers were so confusing
Although an under division course, expect heavy studying for in-person final and midterm exams. Expected to memorize source authors and evidence. Great professor, super knowledgeable and funny, but not an easy course if you're not used to reading and memorizing information.
Lots of reading, very tough grading and vague criteria on midterm and paper and final
I love Prof O'Connor, she's the sweetest soul you'll meet. She wants everyone to succeed and build their critical thinking skills! Such an interesting class, and was a pleasure to learn about. Do the readings, go to lecture. Attendance is taken + worth it! My TA, Catalina was also the best! Tough grader, but super sweet and helpful.
hist 74 is genuinely so light. prof o'connor was super nice, only issue is attendance is mandatory through write-ins at the end of every class. but ur TA is the make or break, Gabriel and Catalina are the goats, everyone else is bad. but class was hella easy overall, like no work outside of class.
O'Connor is great. She connects concepts well and makes the subject interesting. Her lectures can be pretty dense and sometimes long. Besides that, the class is simple with attendance taken with write in questions. Reading can be quite long sometimes so plan out time to get it done sections are simple and focus on discussion of the reading.
amazing professor who really cares about what she teaches. long readings and sometimes dense lectures, but not many assignments. takes attendance each class with a small writing assignment for completion. one essay, one midterm, one final. all are writing based. loved this class and would take it again.
You can tell she's extremely passionate about her work and her class has taught me so much, especially about poverty measures that exhibit true class and social inequality. Her lectures can get somewhat confusing timeline wise since they don't go in chronological order but overall she's a great professor and I would recommend the class.
The lectures are amazing, and you can tell she loves what she does and is very knowledgeable about her subject. I love how she outlines the lecture as I handwrite my notes. She doesn't go too fast and shows videos. The only hard thing was that the grading criteria weren't very clear among TAs. Readings are necessary for getting a good grade imo
Lectures were engaging and the work was not too difficult. Only 3 essays, no tests. Lots of reading for the essays but manageable. I really liked this class
Excellent lecturer as you can tell she's passionate about the content. Heavy amount of weekly readings but professor breaks them down during lecture and content is super interesting. Assignments mainly consist of 3 papers written throughout the course.
I honestly loved listening to Professor O'Connor's lectures. She's very passionate about what she is teaching and the content is very interesting, I was rarely bored. There are a lot of readings assigned each week but they're pretty manageable and the essays are straightforward and not difficult if you attend lecture.
I really liked this class, I learned a lot. The essay topics were interesting and topical, including the final project. The content is difficult to absorb and can be time-consuming, but if you're interested in the subject you will greatly enjoy this class.
Very good lecturer. Clear that she is well-educated, especially on the topics she teaches. Always easy to follow, engages very well with the class, and is very kind. Will answer questions in depth and make sure students understand. Readings are assigned weekly, but she breaks them down in lecture so that we truly understand. Highly recommend.
Definitely, a lot of reading in this class but the professor is nice, the material is interesting, and the essays aren't too bad. Would definitely recommend it for a History major but maybe not for someone who is not especially certain in their essay writing abilities.
I loved this class! Professor O'Connors lectures are socratic, which I like, and utilizes slideshow presentations. She really cares about her students but is also a great teacher!
Professor O'Connor was great! Super sweet lady and is very passionate about what she teaches. The lectures were always super interesting and meaningful. Some of the assignments can be a little difficult, but overall not too bad. Remember to stay engaged during lecture and section, everything you learn in this class is very valuable. Loved it!
If you do take this class get ready for lots of random weekly readings and if you want to know anything that's going on in the class going to lecture is something I highly recommend. Class is purely graded on 3 essays and the final project which was confusing. I took this pass/no pass because I knew this wasn't going to be an easy class.
Professor OConnor really made this class enjoyable and I loved learning about current events. While the class is graded on 3 papers, the prompts arent too difficult. However, there is a bias woven throughout lectures and readings that can be difficult to respect since both sides are not argued. All in all, a great class!
Pre-recorded lectures. Biased "Historical," information. Very, very left-leaning. Echo chamber. Disagree with perspectives in class and prepare to be the outlier. Safe space in college used to mean something. That is was safe to take risks and to learn in a (safe space) to then be prepared for real life. Not anymore. The class is 100% lecture.
I feel like she purposefully writes her essay prompts to be as ambiguous and confusing as possible. In multiple cases, my TA had to verbally rephrase the prompt because the written one made absolutely no sense. Also, O'Connor is very bias. Her lectures are very one-sided and she lacks understanding of other people's viewpoints.
