Holland is such a sweetheart. She was engaging and tried to make the 8 am worth the lack of sleep. She was SUPER clear on what would be on the exams as long as you go to lecture before tests you'll know exactly what to study. It's a lit class, so obviously reading is necessary, but the stories were enjoyable. Just read and exist in lecture.
Holland is soft spoken but will tell you all that you need to know to pass the class during lectures. Make sure to go to lectures and get a good TA since she/he will be grading your final paper. There's a midterm and final as well but its super easy. Really enjoyed the class.
Those people who gave her a lame rating is simply due to their laziness. If you don't try hard and fail the class is your own problem. Me having an A+ is a solid proof. The class is oriented around literature about animals, fun and educational at the same time. No surprises on exams.
I went to all of her lectures... Her guest lectures were mediocre and boring. All of the readings were very basic except for Rousseau's Discourse on Inequality. There were 2 homework assignments, 1 essay, 1 midterm and a final. Her analyses of works of literature were similar to the analyses on cliffnotes. You'll probably fall asleep too.
She's a great teacher, very sweet and kind. She focused on animals and fables in this course, intriguing material. Was rough to wake up at 8am. Also occasional guest speaker lectures. The readings are pretty interesting.
Her exams and homeworks were very straightforward and if you attended the lectures you would have no problem on the midterm or final. She's also really understanding and gave me an extension on the final paper because I had so many other assignments due the same day.
The reading is very interesting and the material is easy to learn. Her lectures are pretty boring, but she's aware that the class is considered just a GE by most and so she is really lenient and helpful. I'd definitely recommend this class to both those that like English and those that don't because the reading is fun and the class is easy.
I suggest taking this class. Although there is a good amount of reading, it was never overwhelming. The stories are interesting and surprisingly enjoyable. I didn't regularly attend lecture and managed to get an A on the Midterm and papers. If you read, you will do well. There are two easy homework assignments and a final paper. Buy the reader.
Great class! I learned a great deal. Lots of reading so don't fall behind. Just schedule yourself to read an hour or two a night during the week and you'll be fine. I loved the unorthodox approach to the midterm and final. The only beef I have is the readings in the second half were terribly dry, and the final paper topics were rather weird.
Her lectures are so boring. Midterm was pretty difficult but the final was easier. She goes through her lecture slides so fast and gave too much reading for a quarter. Goes over topics in detail very quickly and it's hard to write it all down. Try to avoid....
Great teacher, I thought that for a CLIT class the lectures were actually pretty entertaining. She chooses a theme for the class so that the readings and analysis have some direction, this quarter it was "time". Readings were mostly interesting and short. Two easy 2-page essays, 1 final 6-page essay, challenging midterm and final.
holland really cares for her students and her class. lectures were very boring sometimes, and other times pretty interesting. readings were actually good reads and she is very hepful in her office hours. very willing to work with students. take the class, its good.
