It's been two years since I took his writing 1 in my freshman year. I still have to label his class as one of the most demanding ones (as intro level) I've ever had in UCSB. TBH tho, although you should be ready for way more work than other WRIT 1ers, you'll also be certain that you are doing some REAL writings as you grind through. Choose wisely.
Six years later, I look back to my freshman year at UCSB and realize how helpful this class for me. Put in the work and you WILL see results. I transferred schools and took a writing class my senior year. My teacher was impressed with my writing style and ability to communicate a message concisely. I owe it to Bernstein!
Bernstein is by far one of the best professors I've had. Yes, he is an extremely tough grader, but I would not be the writer I am today if I hadn't taken his class. Stay on top of your work, and always seek extra help and you'll do well. If you only care about getting good grades DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. This will set up your writing for life.
Bernstein is tough like boot camp, but once you get out the results are more than worth the effort. If you're at school to learn, and not just to get good grades, take his class. You will be an excellent writer for the rest of your life.
Mashey was the first college professor that ever made me cry. He will insult and belittle you in front of the class and feel no remorse. With that being said, he's was right in every way. Tough but teaches you a wealth of knowledge. He made me grow as a writer and we actually ended up building a friendship. I respect him a lot as a professor.
One of the absolute hardest classes that i've ever taken, but also one that I'm glad I took. This guy will challenge you until until you might reconsider being a writer at all. But you'll be better for it. Possible to get an A if you put complete effort into it.
