It's been two years since I took his writing 1 in my freshman year. I still have to label his class as one of the most demanding ones (as intro level) I've ever had in UCSB. TBH tho, although you should be ready for way more work than other WRIT 1ers, you'll also be certain that you are doing some REAL writings as you grind through. Choose wisely.

Six years later, I look back to my freshman year at UCSB and realize how helpful this class for me. Put in the work and you WILL see results. I transferred schools and took a writing class my senior year. My teacher was impressed with my writing style and ability to communicate a message concisely. I owe it to Bernstein!

Bernstein is by far one of the best professors I've had. Yes, he is an extremely tough grader, but I would not be the writer I am today if I hadn't taken his class. Stay on top of your work, and always seek extra help and you'll do well. If you only care about getting good grades DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. This will set up your writing for life.

Bernstein is tough like boot camp, but once you get out the results are more than worth the effort. If you're at school to learn, and not just to get good grades, take his class. You will be an excellent writer for the rest of your life.

Mashey was the first college professor that ever made me cry. He will insult and belittle you in front of the class and feel no remorse. With that being said, he's was right in every way. Tough but teaches you a wealth of knowledge. He made me grow as a writer and we actually ended up building a friendship. I respect him a lot as a professor.

One of the absolute hardest classes that i've ever taken, but also one that I'm glad I took. This guy will challenge you until until you might reconsider being a writer at all. But you'll be better for it. Possible to get an A if you put complete effort into it.

Bernstein is great. I came into the class worried because I heard about his intensity but it really helped me. He's not as hard as everyone says, you just have to put in effort. Solid teacher. Highly recommend!

Bernstein's class always stressed me out but he made me a better writer. Everyone always said he made them cry when discussing paper revisions but he was really helpful. I worked my ass off and got a B+. He will improve your writing, but expect to work for it.

Least helpful professor ever. Clearly does not want to help his students. Believes he is better and does not have time for students. Don't take. Will make you hate writing. Would be a good class if he cared about students.

This man warns you on the first day that he will challenge you. That he does but Bernstein definitely makes you a better writer without a doubt. I seriously suggest to take this class. I got a bad grade on my first paper and before the final he will let you rewrite it for a hight grade. I passed his class with a B, just apply yourself. Good luck.

Mashey is interesting to listen to and is very knowledgable about the field. BUT, DONT TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS YOU'RE VERY SERIOUS ABOUT WRITING! He knows his stuff, and he expects you to have a large bank of cultural knowledge and vocabulary. If this is not your strong suit, you will struggle! Hardest, yet most informative class I've taken at UCSB.

He really wants you to be a better writer. Peer review process is very helpful. However, hes inconsistent with his feedback (telling you to do one thing first, and then saying something entirely different.) Sometimes hes harsh just for the sake of being harsh in front of everyone in class, but then is entirely different when you speak one on one.
