Genuinely the worst professor I ever had at UCSB. Permitted students to say incredibly racially insensitive things during lecture and when confronted, essentially blamed it on the student for not redirecting the entire class conversation (which should be her own job) and had an overall extremely insensitive response. Would give her a 0 if I could.
I took history of directing with her. The class itself was a little boring but super easy. Easy and short reading before each class and attendance is mandatory. Just do the readings and take notes (you can use them on the quiz) and you'll get an A. Highly recommend this class as an upper div elective regardless of your major.
I'm so happy to see Charlotte on RMP, I took THTR 5 with her in Fall 2021 and she was amazing. She cares about everyone and stresses importance on the values and craft of acting but she is also really nice. If you can take a class with her, DO IT! If you put in the work, it's an easy A, and remember to have fun!
I LOVED this class when I took it in winter quarter! You write a play pretty much every other week with specific criteria that help to steer students towards a better way of writing. Charlotte is a very encouraging instructor starting the class with the motto "dare to be stupid", to show that we should dare to write about anything.
Charlotte is by far one of the best instructors at UCSB. She is clearly dedicated to the students and to the subject. She puts maximum effort into the class. Her presentational skills are phenomenal and she is an expert at keeping students intrigued in the course. She is so down-to-earth and genuinely just a great person and instructor overall.
Class is mandatory but is a generally welcoming experience. There is lots of play reading and writing, but the class is an amazing opportunity to get familiar with the theatre department at the school and improve as a writer in almost every way. Fantastic class. Fantastic professor.
