LEE J W
Professor Lee is an expert in Mediterranean history, making this topic quite fun. He likes to have fun in class, and lectures are usually not dull due to his personality. No electronics, handwritten notes only that you must submit at the end of the week so you have to go to class. lots of readings. midterm, paper, and final. final is open note.
Not a history person but Prof Lee makes everything feel interesting. Slides are posted but most of info comes from actual lecture, attendance is important to understanding the class. Section attendance is mandatory. There's one paper but it's only 1250-1500 words. Cheat sheet allowed on the final was very helpful. He wants you to succeed! Fun class
For what supposedly is an easy class, this was the hardest I've worked for a GE grade. Covers too much content at a fast pace. You have to memorize a ton of locations for the final, often mentioned once or twice in lecture ever. You also have to read 2 books and a very expensive course reader. Very long final with broad essay questions.
very weirdly structured class. makes you buy a reader he could've easily made a PDF so that it was accesible to everyone. assigned seating during lecture. wouldn't reccomend unless you're ready to read a lot. also, doesn't allow a cheat sheet on the midterm like so many past comments. not that great of a professor overall.
This class is an easy grade if you want to take it for general education. I took his class in my fall quarter, the test was easy. He gives you study guides and allows a cheat-cheat. There was one mid-term, one final, and two papers that were due over the course. Take this course if you want an easy A!
Prof. Lee was so interested in the subject that it was difficult not to get excited about it as well. The readings could be hard to get through, but sections were helpful in making sure you got everything you could out of them. Midterm and final had study guides, so you knew exactly how to prepare and we could take a note sheet to the final.
He is enthusiastic about the course material, but lectures could be a bit boring and unorganized. Go to the lectures, take notes, read the readings and you'll be fine. Also you can bring a legal size note sheet to the final which was great.
Overall great guy and good lecturer. Lecture got a bit boring at times but was very informative. Section participation matters. Pretty easy midterm and final. Got to bring legal sized piece of paper with notes for final.
Professor Lee is enthusiastic, caring, and lenient. He is understanding of the situation and would gladly help out within his capabilities; would 10/10 take him again.
I am a really slow reader, so I struggled a lot in Lee's class, but I learned so much in his class. If you like to read especially about history, then you will enjoy his class a lot. If you just want to satisfy your GE requirement, take some easier class.
Honestly he seems like a really nice guy, he's super passionate about Greek history and that is clearly his passion, but don't take history 2a with him. The lectures are all over the place and aren't organized. He rambles about random stuff that has nothing to do with the papers/assignments. If you get a good TA, they will be helpful tho
Professor Lee was very nice for allowing me to be a remote student for his in-person class. He spends most of the class lecturing to the students, so you need to pay attention. He assigns a bunch of reading from Xenophon's book. Luckily, there is only one book to purchase for this course. All and all, I really enjoyed Prof Lee and his course!
