SOC130GC - Her first time teaching this course. Really passionate professor that by no means deserves all the flak she gets from students. Read the assigned articles and go to lecture and you'll be fine. If not, then no dip you'll do bad. And that's your fault not the professors :)
I am really confused by all of the negative ratings. I am so happy that I didn't listen to the ratings as she is one of my favorite professors I have had at UCSB. Lectures were interesting, grading was fair, and she is just a really great person and teacher!! If you are actually engaged in your education please ignore the negative reviews!
I was surprised to see that there's more bad ratings. Kornberg is a very laid-back and kind professor. Her lectures aren't necessary, but it's not bad to go to and there's stuff on the exams that aren't in the textbook. As long as you read the textbooks and take the effort to understand the content, this course is not hard at all.
If you don't have great memorization, don't take this class. She did not give study guides, so it was difficult to focus on a few topics for the exams. Instead, I had to study everything from the textbooks, slides, and notes from guest speakers. Grading is stingy. I got a 21/25 on my paper despite putting so much effort and time into it.
Sociology 1 was very easy. It is a textbook-driven class, therefore, you could skip out on attending lectures. 1 midterm, 1 final, and 1 essay. Although lecture attendance isn't necessary and you could get by not going, she does sometimes put things on the exams that aren't in the book. Only downside is the lack of content in her slides.
Dana Kornberg is a great professor! Don't let her score on here scare you. She is a very flexible grader and as long as you understand the concept of what she's saying, take good notes, and read the textbook you'll succeed! I found her very passionate and understanding, she even curved the final because some people didn't do so good.
The class isnt that hard, youll have to show up to sections which dont help at all with midterm or final, midterm was pretty easy, and for the final there were a few curveballs. Got an 89.5 in the class and the professor makes it seem as if its against the law to give slight extra credit when the class is just a GE but whatever.
I really enjoyed SOC 1! The exams were extremely straight forward, with clear expectations on what should be studied. I'm not exactly sure why reviews for Kornberg are so low - my friend and I who both took the class agreed that the essay and tests were easy if you follow the study guide and read the textbook chapters.
She is nice, but the midterm was pretty much only term-based. Then the final is flipped on your head with little key details from lecture when she's rambling about statistics, which are extremely boring most of the time and hard to pay attention to, and unimportant relative to the test, she also just reads of lecture slides. However, TA was awesome
Unorganized course. Mid-term was light with the main focus on key-terms/topics. Final was horrendous with multiple students asking what to study 2 DAYS BEFORE FINAL. Kornberg was not at all helpful and lacked clear guidance for the final. Sections did not prepare for anything that was on the midterm/final.
Lectures were quite boring and hard to follow, and barely any interaction with students. Doesn't really give a guide on what to study for on exams. TA was awesome but still would not take again.
I loved Kornberg her lectures are amazing! Grades are straight forward with two tests, discussion posts and a final of your choosing. Readings are excellent and easy to understand, but they are lengthy!
