I really enjoyed this class. There is going to be a substantial amount of reading, but he discusses it in class. He is an amazing lecturer, and not monotone which helps keep you engaged. He doesn't just read off slides but engages the class. 1 in-class test and 2 online essay exams. Gives great feedback during office hours. Overall goated professor
POLS1 was no doubt a hard course; the readings are longgg and so dense. Give yourself enough time to read them and he'll explain everything in lecture very thoroughly. he's clearly super passionate which makes lectures more interesting. Gotta attend lecture tho, thats the only way anything makes sense. Go and you'll be fine
Morgan-Hobbes had pretty dry lectures and if you aren't into philosophy, this class lowkey sucks. He randomly selected certain students tests to grade instead of the TA grading them, and did so very harshly. I think the class overall could have been worse, but the material being so dry along with the prof being dry was a bad combo.
The reason I think this class was a little difficult is because the readings were sometimes hard to understand, but the professor is amazing and goes over everything in lecture. The class is quite scary because it's based on quizzes, two midterms, and a final paper. But, if you understand the CORE concepts of the philosophers, you'll be fine.
class was interesting but hard, if you lock in its not terrible. midterms are short answer then essays and we got to have a note card. final was a paper which is graded harshly but if you work really hard is possible to get an A on. Morgan daves was my TA and he was AMAZING
Chase always has very interesting lectures even if he sometimes rambles. He also lets student question take up a lot of time during lectures when can sometimes force him to cram content but it's not too bad. Definitely a hard grader but very good about feedback. No textbook but readings for every class, 20-70 pages per class.
Going to lectures is VITAL to understanding the weekly readings. The way he lectures is interesting and engaging - I enjoyed this class. Grading is super harsh but going to lectures and listening to TAs proved helpful. I would definitely take another class with him.
The most lecture dependent class I've taken but super manageable. Weekly quizzes that aren't hard if you do readings. Two in person midterms and take-home final which was nice. If you go to lecture and read, even if you don't completely understand everything, you'll get an A in my opinion. Not too hard
This class is very rewarding but very tough. I came into this class my first quarter as a first year pre poli sci student, and I don't know if that was the best choice. You will have to read a lot, but the professor's lectures do help break everything down. Make sure you have effective college - level essay writing skills before you do this class.
Go to lecture!! The biweekly readings are a lot to digest (by nature of the class) but works to explain nuances thoroughly. Weekly quizzes on said readings, two midterms, and a take home final essay. Straightforward grading and often opens the floor to discussions in class. Silly fella that I learned a lot from in a course that can be daunting.
Professor Hobbs-Morgan is truly one of the best teachers and lecturers I have had. I am only a first-year student, and I can tell you he is one of the most caring professors at UCSB. He is truly passionate about what he teaches and your success. Don't get me wrong; this class is quite difficult and tedious, but Hobbs-Morgan makes it so worth it.
A difficult but rewarding class! His lectures are so good and really helps you better understand the tough weekly readings! He really cares about the subject and students. There are weekly short quizzes, two exams, and one take-home final essay.
