RUTHERFORD K
He's just the best
He's nice. He does "contract grading" so it's mostly by completion/effort. You have to write an additional paper to argue for an A rather than B (assuming you did the completion part to get a B minimum).
Contract grading, super nice, genuinely wants to help you succeed as an engineer and in understanding writing
I didn't really like his teaching style (contract grading, a lot of group work and busy work) but he is an incredibly caring person. The best experiences I had with him was during individual meetings. Very accommodating and kind, and will help you succeed.
All main assignments are fun and engaging. The criteria for Contract Grading is pretty clear- we just have to be consistent with our work through the quarter. Kevin is very accessible in and out of class, and offers helpful feedback on projects. You have to read and write A LOT for this course though, so it's best to stay on top of things.
He's a great guy and professor. I don't necessarily enjoy his contract grading, but it is very fair none the less. His advice on essays is very useful and he definitely cares about his students. He's very passionate about writing and teaching and loves the history of writing.
Terrible course! Contract grading but horribly heavy workload. Need to do extra works to get A. Classes are composed of endless discussions. Nothing but torment. You will learn nothing. DO NOT TAKE this class!
Such an awful teacher! I cannot understand why he receive a high score!!! If you want a easy a-2 writing class, DO NOT TAKE 109F. He teaches nothing! You will find yourself always writing some reflections or some other writing tasks making no sense! EXTREMELY HEAVY WORKLOAD and is COMPLETELY MEANINGLESS.
By far the BEST professor I've had at UCSB, I highly recommend taking his class. He does contract grading which means a lot less stress.
The class hasn't ended yet, I just want to write this to appreciate how good Kevin is as a professor. He's the "best-friend" type of prof, very nice to talk to, super inspirational. I can't find anyone who is more considerate than him, he is too nice to be a human being, he is the best prof I ever had so far and take him if you have the chance.
Prof Rutherford is fantastic. Do yourself a favor and take a class with him. I took Writing for Film this past year in the online asynchronous format, and it was fantastic. It is the type of class you can tailor to your interests and curiosities and it teaches you a lot about media. You just have to like and be relatively good at writing!
If you see his class, just take it. Your experience will be as good, if not better, than anyone of the professors class. Workload was more than fair, with grading done on effort and completion so that anyone can earn an A/A-. We had 1-2 short weekly writing assignments, a resume/cover letter, and an interesting Business Proposal and Presentation.
