Sadly, Richard Helgerson died of cancer last year. He is missed.

Although Medieval Literature isn't really my cup of tea, Helgerson managed to make even Chaucer somewhat interesting. He was always enthusiastic about the subjects he taught. Also liked that he let the class pick topics for the final. Such a shame that he passed away!

Professor Helgerson is a sweet older man. But his class is a complete snoozefest and the final and papers are difficult. However, he is totally into the subject and really cares about his class.

Prof. Helgerson is very experienced in teaching. He is passionate about teaching, and very approachable. But let me warn you, the final is intense, so study up and prepare.

I loved him!! His classes were so fun.

The material sucked, but Helgerson was one of my favorite professors at UCSB. He was entertaining which made the lectures worthwhile.

The reading material was pretty boring, but the lectures weren't that bad. He's obviously very interested in what he's talking about and it shows when he lecutres. Cool guy. Exams and papers were fail.

helgerson was pretty cool. He did the best he could with the subject matter. He is very fair, passionate about what he does and extemely interested in the student succeeding. He actually made the subject somewhat interesting however the weekly journal entries were a pain.

All large lecture survey courses are boring but his class is by far the best. He is interested in what he is teaching and he really does care about his students. He is just so cute with his little jokes and obscure references.

Not at all helpful. I had an extra honors section in his class and even though I got an A, it was more in spite of him then anything else. Just does not care about students. No interesting things to say about what we read. Lectured about random crap only marginally related to subject.

He is really passionate about what he teaches and tries to connect the reading with movies that students our age would identify with. Very cool guy, leaves text open for interpretation, and is always willing to discuss ideas with you.

why are these other people ****ing? if you think 101 is boring why would you take it or why by an english major? whatever. helgerson is one of the best, especially in a small setting. worldy, witty, funny, down to earth. very fair, and cool
