Eric was the worst professor Ive had at UCSB. Most of the lecture he reads off his slideshow and the slides are always so packed with text its hard to take notes. When he includes examples he usually just shows the solution without working through the problem with the class. His tests also include a lot of definitions rather than math problems
I was optimistic at the beginning of the quarter because he's smart and interesting. But the lectures are confusing. Expect to spend a considerable amount of time self-learning. Use CLAS. True/false questions from the hw end up on the exams, make sure you understand them. Study definitions! He sends a list of terms to know but no practice exams.
Sounds like a smart guy but when it comes to teaching, it isn't his cup of tea. Uses too much jargon and doesn't provide practice exams so you're literally lost on what to study for.
He reminds of Justin Russo (WOWP) with how proper and specific he is. However, his class is tough. Learned more stuff in section. His lectures are the same as the book. Definitely intelligent but terrible at explaining things to the point you can have an intuitive sense. No practice midterms so you really have no clue what the test is gonne be like
reads off the lectures which have the same jargon as the book. Very confusing at times especially with all the theorems and definitions
Eric focuses on the theorems and the explanation of why versus performing problems and examples. For someone who is not a math major and gets confused in all the mumbo-jumbo of math texts he is not the right professor. recommend taking his class if you wish to continue to higher math if not maybe go with a professor who is more example based.
I'm honestly confused as hell right now. There's no practice midterms.
He reads off of his slides and doesnt actually work out any type of problems by hand. Its all abstract and confusing if you arent listening super carefully. The textbook is everything Im depending on right now. Hes nice and chill but needs to work stuff out especially since its complex matrix calculations
Samperton is the best math professor I've had at UCSB. He does such a great job at explaining things, and actually shows students how math is applied in the real world. It's a bummer that he's only visiting because UCSB lacks great lecturers. He's passionate about math and it's evident through his teaching. I definitely recommend anyone taking him.
Lord, bless this man. He is the only interesting math prof I've had at UCSB. He gets so visibly stoked on math and is great at explaining things in a way that makes sense. Also very very good looking, highly recommend this guy.
Eric is one of the most solid choices in the math department. Hes young, relatable, and easy to understand. However, the class has a significant difficulty spike after the midterm, so be prepared to spend many hours banging your head against a table trying to finally understand it all. Other than that, take Eric over other choices!
