He was fine. Your grade isn't made up of much. He doesn't grade Packback posts until after the final so you literally have no idea what your grade is the entire semester. Lectures were pretty short. Lots of reading if you're actually gonna do it but its a political science course so you're voluntarily signing up for reading. Not his fault
I don't agree with the other posters. I really enjoyed this class and professor. There was a lot of reading but it is a political science class so reading is expected. I really liked how engaging he was and he did offer extra credit. Show up to class to get hints on how to write your essays.
Ugh. Dr. MG was a cool guy, but the readings were way too heavy and the lectures did little if anything to help clarify them. Section was not really helpful either for this particular class. This class made me lose all interest in political parties :(. Hopefully in the future he can refine his course design to be more effective and engaging.
I hear all of the concerns others have posted on this page. However, overall I do really like this professor and would recommend him to others (with the caveat that there is a LOT of reading). I find the class to be engaging and if you go to his office hours, he's more than willing to help with questions about the papers.
All I can say is this class in not it. I was interested in political parties and my enthusiasm has gone out the window. He knows he is not doing such a hot job teaching but brushes it off his shoulders while our grades take the punch. As a recent college grad I expect him to understand that his work load is too much and those readings are too long.
This is the first class I have taken where I want to quit school and never return. He gives out way too many readings that are too long. We have to do an annotated bibliographies with 22 citations and most of them we wont even use in our final paper. If he is serious about teaching he needs to notice that his teaching strategies dont work.
Honestly, he got me... up with the readings. 68 pages for one article & on top of that, more articles for a week? As well as having smaller assignments due?? Our bibliography had a total of 22 citations which included citation, summary, and personal notes. Uhm, no. ALSO, don't take it for an 8 am. You will regret it! Good thing? No tests.
Professor Meyer-Gutbrod is amazing, try to take his class if you can!! He made lectures so interesting and was so passionate/enthusiastic every lecture. He was also great about relating class topics to current American politics. Not an easy A, but just make sure to go to lecture, office hours, and get a head start on the papers.
I honestly like him, even though sometimes he starts talking really fast and it's hard for an international student to follow (he's really passionate about the class). He 's very approachable outside of the class. Overall he's a nice guy, though the class can be a bit challenging. The review package is indeed huge, but at least there exists one.
He would go on tangents that really had nothing to do with his tests. One midterm, one final, and an essay. He assumes you know everything about politics like an upper div (this class is open for everyone). The midterm was stupidly hard and there was no study guide. He is the worst professor at UCSB. Don't take.
Dr. Meyer-Gutbrod is so engaged with the students. He is a fantastic lecturer who walks around the auditorium so even people in the back feel involved in the discussion. He is clearly passionate about politics! I thoroughly enjoyed this class, and it made me happy I chose political science as my major! Thank you for a fantastic quarter, Dr.!
The professor is treating the class as it was an upper-division class, when it's not even restricted to poli sci major only. He gave us a 'study guide' with 125 terms, which were very specifik as well as 40 thesis-like questions.
