Detering was pretty good as profs go. His lectures were kinda fast sometimes, but if u rlly spent the time and effort that u should on a class like this it was very managable. The class material itself wasn't too bad, the hwk was short, the python hwk was fun at times, and he made the tests easier than the practice problems. Overall pretty good.

Good lectures, but Detering is a very strict person and does not curve very much even though averages were very low. Hmwk was very difficult, exams were also very difficult, I just wish Detering was more lenient for grading. My TA also carried a lot in terms of simplifying his lecture material. I enjoyed his lectures and the material a lot though.

Nice person but hard/insane prof. No HW solutions, midterm solutions or practice test solutions so there is no way to know if your understanding is correct. Also, he does not help with HW or reply to emails so Youtube is your bestie. He did bring candy for the final and he is nice; just expect to work a 24/7 toxic work mentality in order to pass.

Refuses to help you with homework. Also does not provide homework solutions. Office hours are essentially useless the entire quarter. Test heavy with 30% midterm and 40% final or 70% final with 30% homework option

The python homework has nothing relate to the lecture. And he only provides some Python formula sheet to let you figure out by yourself. Not replying email regarding homework questions. No solution provided and the lecture is not useful.

Completely trash professor. The lecture is not clean and you need to take a lot of time with office hours or section to understand things. And during the strike there is no any extra help, no homework solution, no curve, and not even go over all the practice final questions. Python homework is not related to the lecture.

Detering does not give out solutions to any HW problems, midterm problems, or practice problems. He does maybe 1-3 examples on the board per lecture, and many of them are not full problems but rather unnecessary proofs. No way to prep properly for tests. Even TAs don't know the answers. Don't take him if you value your GPA.

He hardly shows any examples related to hw, assigns both a computation/proof hw and a python hw every week, discourages students from asking questions in office hours (which end wednesday at 9 am despite some concepts taught on wed at 3 pm for hw due on fri), and does not provide a good textbook. Ive never felt more lost and unsupported in a class.

One of the nicest professors in the PSTAT department. He really wants every student to get a good grade so that the exam was not hard. If you want you can try to negotiate with him if you think exam time is not enough and so on.

Professor Detering is hands down the best math professor I've ever had. He is really nice and super helpful during office hours and lectures. His lectures were very clear and detailed. The tests were very fair and the weight of the grades was really nice: 50% hw and 50% tests. I would definitely take another class with him.

Decent professor. Python/written hw and and midterm/final were worth 25% each. Final could replace midterm (50% weight). HW is doable based on lecture slides. Midterm and Final were okay in difficulty. Recommend basic python programming knowledge before taking. Emails were answered in about a day. Review section material for success. Okay class.
