Great Professor! I am taking PHI 227 (I didn't have the option to pick PHI 227), but we meet one day a week and discuss the readings. We have easy weekly quizzes on the readings, and we have to write 6 4-5 page essays before the final. He is very understanding, and a nice professor.
Great professor, everything was fun and made sense and allowed you to come up with your own opinion. The discussions were super fun and was always looking forward to come up with a point of view on it. Super respectful professor and just an overall great person. 10/10
The PHIL 100B taught by him is the worst philosophy course I have ever taken. I received an A in the PHIL 100A course. The PHIL 100B is difficult not because of its course material but the quality of his teaching. For most of the time, he does not even understand certain major themes.
Fantastic slides but lectures sometimes dragged on. The polls were a nice touch! The class itself is p fascinating and gives you a better perspective on some contentious topics. 5 short quizzes, a 5 page term paper, and a midterm and a final (both of which are two 2 page papers based directly on his lectures). Overall, a respectful and funny prof!
Not a difficult class if you attend every lecture and pay attention to the main points. Lots of Q and A, which can be useful if you ask questions but slows things down a little. Expectations are very clear, and the weekly quizzes are super easy if you just show up to lecture.
This class is interesting and pretty easy. Jeff keeps class interesting with polls and discussion mixed into lecture. He leaves lots of time for questions (this can sometimes make class drag on a bit but is also helpful at times) and is super accessible. If you apply yourself this class won't be a problem at all.
I personally really enjoyed Jeff during Phil4 (winter 2020); his lectures were concise in my opinion and the exams reflected his material, with some slight extra studying. He is also a sweet and slightly quirky man; maybe the ones who had a problem with him are just miserable? I did not attend every lecture but still received As on the exams
His attempts to make the class relatable and enjoyable were there and he did a good job. His passion for Ethics and Philosophy is apparent and contagious. I think he gets a bad rep because his lectures are dense, but that is just how philosophy is. He's an understanding professor and gave us a take-home final to alleviate stress in uncertain times.
Very clear lectures and tried to make the 8am interesting as possible. Readings were adequate length and he covers them in great detail in lecture. Online quizzes are easy if you pay attention in class and skim the readings. Midterm was fair and the paper was not hard.
Jeff Bagwell is a really passionate guy and he cares about his students. The topic of philosophy can be boring for different people, but teaching it is extra boring so I understand why many think the class wasn't exciting. But content aside, although he is a relatively new professor, he is super kind and wants all of his students to succeed.
I believe he is a very straight forward teacher that has clear expectations and really enjoys teaching! Hes a grad student and is better than most professors Ive had
Jeff Bagwell is new to teaching, speaks slowly, and has an uncanny ability to make interesting material so boring you fall asleep. The iclicker questions are unnecessary, the sections are a waste of time, and the tests are easy but weirdly worded. One unforgettable test question argued against Gandhi. But hey, it's easy.
