Her class is really boring and difficult to follow. The homework and midterm practice do not help a lot for the exams. The exams are much harder and she even does not give curve. Never take her class again.
Just NO. I had to google half the concepts for better thought out explanations. Lectures confused rather than helped. Why am I self teaching when tuition costs so much?? Makes me demotivated in my education ugh.
First class Ive been in where everyone was curved down. An 80% was a C+. This was ridiculous.
Considering online classes, professor did a fine job explaining concepts simply and she's nice. But most learning comes by yourself in this class. Homework and quizzes weekly! Midterms were rushed and difficult given online format. Easy to fall behind so beware. Practice from homework and practice exams. Requires a lot of effort just to pass!
Her grading method really messes with students. Student go into the final blind regarding their grade in the class because of the curve. She also refuses to let you know your place on the curve so students have no idea what letter grade you have. I guess one positive is that she made the final optional for students but thats it.
I really dont think she cares that much for her students. She literally only give you 50 min for the two midterms , which is no where near enough time and the questions are much much harder than the practice midterm problems. She is also not very nice when responding to students and their concerns.
GPA killer. Try your best to avoid her class. The test problems are ridiculous.
worst professor I meet in the college
As a student who's taken PSTAT 120A with *three* different professors in the stats department, Shatskikh is by far the most clear and concise lecturer. Yes, she's not the most exciting, but her lectures helped me understand things I didn't get when I had previously taken the class. She gives you all the information you need to know.
She goes out of her way to make sure that what is on your exam is not at all like your reviews. She is all about testing and not much else. Make sure to attend all lectures and do HW to do well on quizzes. Beware of her exams, though. She really, really strays from any given materials and just expects you to know it 100%. Would not take again.
Her lectures were very procedural (she would just list off the algebraic operations needed to derive a formula and not provide any intuition). Her quiz questions were often not clearly written. They were rarely ambiguous, but she phrased things oddly and included irrelevant information to throw off students. Not how I like to be to be tested!
Provided solid explanations of all of the course topics and tests were basically just the homework. Stats is a difficult topic, and Professor Shatskikh doesn't shy away from formalisms that some people may find unneccessary, which may be why she's somewhat unpopular. Overall a rigorous but good professor.
