Deeply disorganized class, lectures were just carbon copies of the readings. Though I liked Professor Ferreira, this class most definitely could have been more interesting and fulfilling. Final is a long essay, but it is also literally the only assignment for the entire class. Easy GE, can't recommend it otherwise.
lectures are pointless but participation mandatory for some reason, accent is difficult to understand at first, there were 2 assignments the entire quarter and there was nothing in the gradeboook AT ALL and its week 9. Ferreira is really nice but cancels without notice and overloads TAs who are clearly frustrated with us, huge waste of time.
Professor Ferreira is a very nice and sweet person, but is severely disorganized and even made multiple mistakes on exams and quizzes. She did make up for all of the mistakes in the end with points, but honestly 4/6 of all the exams/quizzes have a mistake on them causing wrong answers, that is just VERY sloppy. Otherwise VERY EASY.
Interpreting is difficult - thats the first takeaway. You practice in front of the whole class so be ready. Shes pragmatic about how you approach, acknowledging the importance of practice and accuracy. Her feedback can be quite direct, dont let that scare you. Overall, I appreciated having this space to improve my interpreting and shes great!
I took the class during the COVID shut campus era, but it doesn't excuse the fact that class was poorly structured. All we got was a syllabus and 2 dates to show up to a mandatory lecture that only covered what we were currently assigned to read by the syllabus, and the assignments weren't even listed in the proper order.
This class and the exams were all asynch, and was also one of the most straightforward classes I've ever taken. There are five exams total, each with five questions taken from powerpoints and readings, and you have two hours to complete them. Overall, the class was very fair for the pandemic and I would absolutely recommend taking this class!
