Michael is great. He is good at lecturing and cares about the material and students. He can talk fast but is always happy to slow down if you ask him to. Go to his office hours and ask him about his research and get clarity on class concepts.
Very fair professor. The second half of class has a lot more material but it is very doable if you put in the effort. I didn't do very well on the midterm but did really well on the final with A LOT of studying and he curved my grade (and other peoples too) due to the improvement in scores between midterm and final. Offered some extra credit too.
Very smart and knowledgable guy! Lectures go fast but the slides provide a basic guideline as to what he is looking for you to know. If you miss something in the lecture, you will find the information in the book. Homework is based on the readings and you are allowed to work with others. Stay on top of the readings and homework and you will do fine
Worst professor ever, I don't understand how someone can cram so much information and concepts in short lectures and expect so much knowledge yet have tests on broad ideas overall. Rude in office hours, pretentious we get it youve done research on flies. Final had mistake, and didn't even notice, Very unprofessional
Michael is super knowledgeable and can answer any question you throw at him. Like other reviews, super heavy lectures that could be a bit more balanced but he obviously has a lot of information to cover in a short quarter. He sometimes does use language and terminology that's not super accessible to non-bio majors, so it can be hard to understand.
this class was difficult because we expected it to be like MCDB 6 w Lowe where she asked us specific details from the book that were irrelevant. The ?s on his test were from the book only if they were also from the slides. The final was great just a ton of info. Hw was good kept me on my toes. I dont like his pretentiousness tho.
Michael does go very fast through the lecture slides as most other reviews are saying, but he's not a bad instructor, especially considering he is still a PhD candidate. You are basically forced to do the weekly reading because the homework is almost entirely based on it, which is very helpful in keeping you accountable and makes the class easy.
Michael goes fairly slow in the first half of the quarter, but after the first midterm he goes through slides so fast. The material gets really dense at the end and it doesn't help how he skips through it without a care in the world. This is a 3 unit class for PBS students, he needs to chill.
Moves way too fast in lectures. Literally introduces 30 new concepts every class, talks about each for about 5 seconds, and then expects us to have in depth knowledge on exams. Clearly a very smart guy but his teaching style only works if you're willing to put 2 hours a day into a 3 unit class. If you're reading this Michael, please slow down.
the way he presents his material in the class is so unorganized and makes it hard to follow his lecture and then read the book. All his homework questions are from the book, but even then the questions are so tricky and confusing. Talk to him in person and hes kinda rude and will tell you to just read to book. Not the best
Ok so his own powerpoint only uses certain points from the book which makes them very organized. Sometimes I wonder if maybe he does this to overcomplicate the material? this is EEMB for PBS students but seems just as hard, By the end of the quarter there is a lot of information and I dont know how he expects us to answer his tricky questions.
Shahandeh is great. He is hilarious, cares about students, and very straightforward about tests. Homework was fairly easy and counted for 25% of class. iClicker was used. He was always prepared and eager to help students. Toward the end of the class, a lot of material was presented and it was difficult to learn so much info :/ Overall, I recommend.
