BENJAMIN R
Rick is one of the most inspirational humans I have ever met. He does not want to be a "gate-keeper of our learning" so his class is not focused on assignments or grades at all. His class is very unconventional and unstructured but I have learned more from this class than almost all my classes at UCSB combined. He is FULL of knowledge and wisdom.
Rick is definitely one of the most unconventional professors you will meet. For one, he doesn't like being called 'Dr' or 'Professor'. He talks to his students like his friends. He's very approachable and you can expect very fast replies to his texts (yes, he uses iMessage and not gmail). Super inspirational person who loves writing and teaching.
Rick is one of the best professors I have had. He makes class very laid back and is truly a great person. We had to write two poems every week but you do not need to be a poet to be in this class.
Don't walk...RUN to take Rick's class. He is one of the most welcoming, kind and inspirational people on campus. He wants you to learn and love poetry as much as he does and is genuinely just an amazing person who cares so much about your improvement. Participation matter but he'll get you so amped up it won't even feel like class.
Rick is the literal best. I took this class for credit in ENV but I'm now telling everybody they HAVE to take one of his classes just for fun! The readings he gave us were interesting, but the conversations in class were even better. No tests or quizzes, just really great conversation with an outstanding dude.
Definitely recommend. He is chill and passionate and attracts cool classmates. There are 2 bigger assignments and weekly reflection posts. The material is pretty emotionally heavy, but all very important. I recommend this class and this prof!
Most amazing human being to walk the face of the earth. He loves his students and is dedicated to teaching more so than any person I have ever met. Do not leave UCSB before meeting him.
I think that everyone who loves literature and the world should take a class taught by Rick Benjamin at least once at UCSB. It will change your life. I love Rick so much. I still think of him regularly and still think about the things I have learned in his class. He is so perceptive, wise and down to earth. He understands the universe. He is great.
Rick knows and loves poetry and you can tell from his class. As my classmates and I said, it's the easiest class but the one you spend the most time on because Rick makes you care about the work you're posting. 2 poems per week20 by the end of the quarter. Be willing to learn at least 3 poems he provides in his packets, love them, recite them.
