Cloos is a pretty hilarious dude who's enthusiastic about philosophy. I had him for PHIL3 Intro to Crit Thinking and the material wasn't difficult at all as long as you get the HW done and spent a couple hours reviewing the material and doing practice problems. Content is closer to simple math and little memorization than abstract philosophy.
Cloos might just be the best professor I have ever had at UCSB. He is caring, quirky, organized, and very knowledgable about what he is teaching. He will answer every question you throw at him, and give tips for upcoming exams. The course requires a $100 online textbook, but it has so many features it is helpful. TAKE THIS CLASS WITH CLOOS!
Great guy, very invested in what he teaches. A lot of dense reading but he explains it well in class. Rather funny from time to time. IMO a harsh grader on the papers. Long study guide for the final (and long final) but the final was just questions pulled off the study guide more or less. Difficult class but worth it.
Did not expect the class to be so hard and the lectures were almost entirely based on the textbook (in easier terms though). Grade based on iClicker, a paper, a midterm and a final. You need to know A LOT of material for the exams but he gives you all the possible prompts beforehand. Not an easy A class- you really have to work for your grade.
Really passionate lecturer! Study guides lay out the exact exam questions, and the paper was very straightforward. Yeah, it's a lot of material but everything is super interesting and Cloos cares about his students. He is also really funny in lectures.
This was the most ridiculous INTRO class I have ever taken here at UCSB. I was genuinely looking forward to taking it because it sounded interesting and because I needed to take it for my major, but it was UNBELIEVABLY difficult. Organic chemistry was easier than this. Highly don't recommend taking this class if you have an alternative.
Expected to know too much material. Too much for an intro class. The amount of material you are asked to know for the final is way too much. My study guide is like 35 pages long.
SO much material. A ridiculous amount of information expected from us to know for the final. He's a great lecturer but he expects way too much from his students. Super stressful.
Christopher is a great lecturer, but the amount of material we had to know for the midterm & cumulative final was RIDICULOUS. Midterm was 8 mult. choice, 8 T/F, 4 short answer & 3 medium answer. There was one paper on immigration. Final is 10 mult. choice, 10 T/F, 5 short answer, 5 medium answer & 2 essays.
It was a very interesting class. He chose a lot of different topics and interesting readings. I learned a lot. He posts his powerpoints online and is very accessible outside of class, but he does do several clicker questions throughout the class. He also does random in-class writing samples, so attendance matters only for a small portion
One of the most passionate professors I have ever had. He is very open to dialogue and questions or philosophical concerns from students in discussion. Plus him being a theist made the class infinitely more interesting than if he were yet another atheist philosophy professor. Plus the dude's face look like it was chiseled by the Greek Gods. Good!
Grad student/instructor who truly cares about his students. Clear and concise in his lectures. Tests were easy if you did the basic preparations. Take a class with him if you get a chance! Overall, great guy!
