idk how she normally teaches but async she was really nice and informative and her assignments were very easy. lots of reading but it was all classic literature so theres a lot of resources. the test are just the quiz questions and she drops the lowest score for quizzes & assignments. very short lectures too, quizzes/final based on lectures & quiz
Very passive-aggressive with participation, doesn't let you take notes on laptops, and really spells everything out for you during the lectures. Lectures can feel almost patronizing sometimes with how obvious she makes things. A very heavy in reading class, but beware: THIS IS NOT A FANTASY CLASS. This is French lit, basically.
She is horrible. The readings are way too long and her lectures make you want to drop her class. We're reading interesting stories, but she ruins it with her lectures. I will never take her class again. She also talks down to you if you try to ask a question. Very, very disappointed in UCSB for letting this woman teach.
Writing the Self could have been a welcome break from academic writing, but turned out to be a ucsb failure. Instead of focusing on and enjoying thoughtful, introspective writing, we were worried about frivolous, inevitable grammatical errors in our French writing. 1% off the total paper grade for every error. Very harsh grading defeats learning
I am very disappointed in the UC system and the French department. She is by no means an expert at the French language and really doesn't know what she is talking about. She is constantly confused and contradicting herself. Definitely do not take if you are serious about an education.
Powers seemed very uninterested in her subject. The first half of classes would be summarized reviews of the last class, and the readings and lectures would often be very thin in content. There was a lack of passion and an overall negative feeling in her class. Easy A, but a lazy and unprofessional course. Not what I expect from a UC.
I absolutely despised this class. The reading material could have been very interesting, but Professor Powers did absolutely no analysis on any of the readings so it was almost useless to even do them. Her grading was very inconsistent--she graded very easily on some things and very harshly on others. I barely learned anything from this class.
