Dr. Evelyn is very passionate about vertebrate zoology and cares about his students. Quizzes are once a week and he makes sure to ask questions on topics that are clearly discussed in lecture. There's two main assignments that really help prep you for graduate writing/research.
A interesting and introductory upper course in eemb dept. If you do the weekly questions, you will do well on final. plus Prof. Evelyn is a nice gay for sure, and very knowledgeable.
A very interesting and introductory course in eemb dept. Prof. Evelyn is a friendly gay. If you do the weekly questions, you will do well in this class. Good choice as an elective upper class.
Straight A if you have kind group mates and good memory. Lectures was a little bit confusing, final was exactly the same as weekly assignments, which totally based on memorization.
He is one of the best EEMB professors, EEMB 131 is pretty straight forward and easy. Recommended for every bio major students!!!!
As long as you are genuinely interested in the material and engage in discussion with Chris, this class is easy. If you show no interest or do not bother to come to lecture, you will have a bad time. I did not study like crazy for this class. I simply paid close attention in lecture, as I found it very interesting, and managed to get an A.
Professor Evelyn is a kind guy and tries his best but wow his lectures honestly make no sense. It sounds like he's confused the whole time and all he does is read word for word off the slides. His tests have essay questions which are very harshly graded and have very confusing wording. Highly recommend not taking his course.
I genuinely don't understand the negative feedback here. He was easygoing and friendly, and the material was understandable. Slides were easy to read and understand. Tests were centered around concepts discussed rather than obscure trivia. Maybe he was a disorganized teacher a few years ago, but he's a pretty standard teacher now.
Prof Evelyn is a nice guy but my favorite part of his class was finishing it so I never had to take it again. I don't think he lectures well and it's anyone's guess as to what class material will actually make it onto the test. Grade turnaround time was terrible and the exams were very difficult and toughly graded. I wouldn't recommend this class.
Such a disappointing class. Chris cares about the material and tries to teach but his lack of organization and clear expectations results in nothing but confusion. He "leads" open ended discussions but never clarifies what the actual correct concepts are that we should to have learned. Exam average was F since no one knew what he was asking for.
While it's obvious that Prof. Evelyn loves this subject and loves teaching, he's not good at it. His lectures are disorganized and even the TAs have no idea what will be on the test, of which there's only one and you better not fail bc it's worth 30% of your grade. If you like learning for knowledge's sake, this class if fun. Otherwise, maybe pass.
This is honestly the worst professor I have had in my four years at UCSB. Professor Evelyn is so unorganized, his lectures make little to no sense and rushes to teach something tangible right before the test. His tests are impossible as he wants a very specific answer. Average for our midterm was an F -- ridiculous. Avoid taking a class with him.
