Lalo is an awful lecturer. He is a great guy, but seriously impossible to follow. Thank god for Mike because his half carried me through the course.
Professor Gonzalez is not a good lecturer. I severely struggled on the exams even though I spent a lot of time studying. He requires reader problems that are NEVER gone over in class. There is so much extra work to do outside of this class in order to do well. Two midterms and a cumulative final, weekly worksheets and quizzes plus forum posts :(
One of the absolute worse professors in all of existence. Lectures are not organized, does not clearly explain topics, provides misinformation, and doesn't even know how to solve problems he himself assigns. Does not take any feedback about teaching and just blames students for not dedicating 22 of 24 hours of the day everyday studying genetics
I actually enjoyed Lalo's lectures - there was a ton of of information, but he tried his best to make it interesting and engaging. He was very accessible and eager to help outside of class, and clearly is passionate about the subject and wants to see his students succeed.
His lectures are pretty unorganized so sometimes you need to rewatch past lectures to get all the material, and he can be unclear about what material will be covered on exams. However, he is helpful during office hours and will work through problems with you until you understand. Like Mike, he wants you to succeed and will work with you.
Not sure why everyone likes Lalo so much. His lectures are unorganized. He backtracks a lot and makes mistakes when explaining concepts. His exams are memorization-based, not concept-based. Also did not like that his lecture videos during online went over the amount of time allotted for the class period (1:30 videos despite 50 minute class)
Was a great lecturer. However during his office hours he wasnt helpful at all. I told him I was confused about an answer to a problem and that my CLAS tutor was also confused and asked him to take a look at it. He responded by saying it was probably a mistake on his end and refused to look at the problem for clarification. Skip office hours.
MCDB 11 is a one unit seminar class that you can take concurrently with chem1A. Very easy HW assignments that take 5 mins. Essentially just a discussion class to meet people. The level of fun rlly just depends on who you get as your LA since u meet with them.
To study for the midterms just want all the lectures again. If you understand the concepts you can easily get an A. Also don't take the online quizzes, iClicker accuracy, and worksheets lightly because those are your free points. Lalo is a great teacher and if you want to put in the effort you will get in the grade.
Lalo has been one of my favorite professors at UCSB. Him and Mike were a great duo for the intro to bio classes. Lectures are recorded, but there is iclicker. The tutorials are super helpful. They both care about the students a lot. Tests are hard, but if you put in the work, you will do fine. Definitely would recommend taking!
Mike and Lalo are the best professors I've had here. They truly care and make lecture very fun and interesting. iClicker points from lecture! Also, most of the exam questions come from iClickers and tutorial section so they make it easy! Also, they're always willing to chat and answer questions. Highly, highly recommend for intro bio.
Lalo is a fantastic professor! He is always cracking jokes, he is super sweet and laid back. Sometimes it is hard to understand him because of his accent but he is happy to help with any questions you have. The small intro bio series was amazing! Tests are pretty hard but he and Mike try their best to help you out and they do prepare you well!
