She is really cool. There is a lot of work involved, but she will hold your hand through it if you need clarification. Very concerned about student success, positive personality, very understanding. She definitely knows her subject and can give you lots of insight using the tools she is familiar with. Kind of person who makes you happy to talk to.
The instructions given are half explained and she assumes everyone knows her expectations when she never stated them, take this class and your gpa will drop
Don't expect to get anything helpful from this class, it's mainly a crash course on how to use STATA. You don't learn anything on the use of stats in a political environment and the assignments are based on learning to create/analyze data from other people's research questions. Find another professor if at all possible.
Her class is easy if you put effort into it. She will work with you for hours until you understand what she wants. She is super caring and awesome at what she does.
I had her for Latino Politics and I was severely disappointed. She is often unprepared or late for class. She teaches mostly from her own opinions and struggles to answer questions that challenge her views. She made non-Latinos in the class feel their opinion was not valid and while the class was easy but I was very disappointed.
PS15 can be a daunting class, especially with the data work required, however Professor Lasala did an excellent job explaining research methods and preparing students for data analysis. I would recommend anyone taking PS15 to invest time before the labs to complete assignments and go to section with questions.
This was the worst PS course I have taken at UCSB. Not only was the professor completely unorganized from the beginning, the lack of communication between professor and TA ended up confusing the class for almost 6 weeks. I learned NOTHING about Latino Politics. Extremely upsetting, this was my last class at UCSB. class was unnecessarily difficult.
This class is focused on writing a research paper which includes quantitative data. We had to use actual data sets and make cross tabs to prove our theory of why there is such a low Latino voter turnout. Lasala was a really nice professor and always willing to help us.
Hardest class I've ever took. It is extremely important to go to class because it is so easy to get confused and fall behind. Everyone in the class was confused but Lasala tries so hard to explain it and is there for you until you fully understand. No tests or a final exam, only 4 papers. Lasala is a very nice lady and rewards you for your effort.
I love this prof, and that is saying a lot because I am not at all interested in PS research. She makes sure that ALL students understand the material before moving on. She even stayed with me and a couple other students after class for almost 2 hours to help us better understand the assignments. She's awesome.
