Terence doesnt give the impression that he cares very much about his students. He is very smart but comes off as pompous and elite. He is impossible to catch outside of the classroom and doesnt return emails. He also doesnt provide very good feedback about your grades, if he even provides feedback at all.
By far the most interesting class I've taken in my 3 years of college. He is an amazing lecturer and gives you something to think about when you walk out of class. Lots of reading and lectures, so I do recommend some interest in the subject. Very smart. Encourages debate amongst the class which is nice. Definitely taking what I learned with me.
I like Professor Keel. He's very knowledgable about a variety of topics, however I found his lectures to be incredible dry. For example, 3 weeks out of the quarter was spent watching documentaries. I understand the significance of the documentaries, but I'd rather spend time in lecture doing other things rather than watching movies.
Dr Keel is extremely intelligent and always had me thinking deeper about the content covered in the course. He did make the material really interesting for me but could come off as intimidating or unapproachable. He expects you to remember a lot of details for the tests; had to spend a lot of time on his course, but i learned a lot
As a student who isn't even a history major, I can tell you it doesn't matter what class you are taking with Prof Keel, you will be extremely grateful you did. He is one of the better lecturers on campus and is the embodiment of a well-rounded professor. If you came to UCSB to learn and grow as a human, trust me and take a course with him. TRUST!
Prof Keel has been one of my more favored professors at UCSB. He's passionate about Black Studies which makes the course significantly more interesting and his lecture methods are ideal. Though he does have a powerpoint, he doesn't really use it and it's more for reference images. Listen to him! He's got a lot of importance to say.
