Terrible professor. Does not provide anything useful for the class and has extremely hard exams. He also does not curve and expects everyone to know the material, so he rarely gives out partial credit.
If there is any professor to chose from other than Chai please take advantage and avoid Chai at all costs. He contributes nothing to the success of his students. He provides no practice review for tests, doesnt let anyone use a notecard, says he will provide all necessary equations but doesnt specify which ones. By far worst professor Ive had.
I recognize that teachers catch a lot of undue flack, and that people love to blame teachers for their shortcomings, but god damn. I genuinely don't understand how Chai holds his job. This course could have been offered online with no instructor whatsoever and it would have been just as effective. Chai contributes *nothing* of value to this course.
Wow Chai is so unbelievably bad. I do not think I learned a single thing from him eventhough I attend every lecture and stay attentive. He really is not able to get the point across and instead just gives a bunch of definition and works out VERY simply problems VERY quickly which is an ineffective way to teach. Avoid him at all costs.
Unfair grading. One of the lowest class averages I've seen at UCSB, yet he doesn't even curve the class. You're lucky if you just manage to pass the class.
So I've had him for two math classes so far and he's actually a great teacher! People blame his accent/teaching style for not doing well in his class instead of themselves for not learning the material well enough. Yes, his courses are challenging and tests are hard, but it's doable. Chai cares about his students and wants them to succeed.
As a vistiing professor coming from China, it's natural that he has some accent when speaking English. But if you taking his class, he teaches based on the textbook, only 5 questions of each homework ( please make sure you understand completley and know how to slove it as most questions of midterm and final comes from HW.
Chai was difficult to understand at first due to his accent. However, you will get used to it within a week or two and if you sit in the front row, he is much easier to hear. Homework is tough but necessary, and if you can complete the homework with a solid understanding of what you are doing, you will easily pass the tests. Read the book too!!!
Very thick accent, my first prof who I could not understand because of it. Lots of homework, which I liked. Tests are much more difficult than the homework. If you are a master of the subject, you might be able to finish the tests in time. My first math class I didn't get an A in, even though the material isn't that difficult.
Tests are a nightmare, almost impossible to finish within the time limit. No note cards and doesn't curve. Rarely responds to emails -- instead regularly sends out emails to the class saying he's busy and can't respond to everyone. Speaks very softly with a strong accent and students frequently ask him to turn up the mic. Make sure you get the HW.
Had him for Math 4B. He didn't curve tests although the averages were quite low. He has a strong accent, speaks quietly, and rarely does actual examples that usefully exemplify the concept. You could take the final online; however, many people likely used online calculators to cheat (whereas I did not) and so there was no curve for the final/class.
So I took him in Math 4B-differential equations. The homework was fine throughout the year, assigning about 1 set per week with about 10 problems each. He thinks the test is easy because he takes the problems from the homework, but he chooses the absolute hardest ones off the homework. Also did not curve even though the midterm averages were 55%
