RANA S
Her lectures made absolutely no sense, she uses big words to try to make it seem like she knows what she's talking about. Class was an easy A but very difficult to sit through. She assigns an absurd amount of reading, expecting students to read entire books in one day. However, midterm and final are really easy and content is somewhat interesting.
Professor Rana clearly cares very deeply about the course materials, and does her best to really connect with her students.
Reading was manageable: 4 books with an average page count of 200. Smaller readings throughout the course that are only relevant for a few easy questions on midterm/final. Both papers have open-ended but manageable prompts. Really not that challenging if you put forth effort and use some critical thinking beyond ChatGPT. Worth it for the GE reqs.
not the worst class ever but lectures were extremely boring and not really relevant to the work you need to do in the class, lots of unnecessary background info. the TA's grade harshly on the two papers that make up the majority of the grade, but the midterm and final are relatively straightforward.
If you are interested in ethnic literature and put a little effort, you will be fine. Attending lecture is important for keywords on tests. Lectures are well-structured and insightful. Readings are really interesting and go by quick, well selected. Not that much reading, not sure why other reviews are complaining when it is a literature class...
the most insane amount of reading i've ever witnessed in a course. I didn't read any of the assigned books and still got a B but like she expected you to be reading like 500 pages a week, girl bye. lectures were so ungodly boring and TA's sucked. they will refuse to regrade papers even if you have valid points. not worth it for a GE.
Too much reading for a lower division but lectures are thorough and interesting. 2 papers, a midterm, and a final but she explains the expectations very well. No homework other than the readings and the papers. Doesn't post notes online so lectures are mandatory to get notes
Professor Rana was an incredible professor whose course I thoroughly enjoyed. All of our readings were interesting, and applicable to current events. Attend lecture! Although it is not mandatory, she speaks about certain patterns or parts of the text that she wants you to reference during exams. Do the readings and be engaged in the class to pass.
Four novels and so many poetry excerpts to read. She doesn't circulate her lecture materials so if you miss a lecture you're cooked, unless you seek out office hours. She's quiet, her lectures are monotonous and droning. Interesting content, extremely uninteresting professor.
Professor Rana is so intelligent, and her analysis of course materials was always in-depth and thought-provoking. She cares about her students and outlines course expectations in a comprehensible manner. There are times when you have to finish novels in a few days, but the course material is so interesting that it often goes by quickly.
She goes over the slides way too fast. Half of the lectures are her reading off of her notes which is respectable because she goes over great information however, this makes the lecture very boring and lengthy. You are also expected to finish novels, movies, essays which does feel a bit overwhelming at times. TA Nirvana was very helpful though!
As an English major, this is way too much for a lower-div. Expected to finish full novels in a day, doesn't post slides, uses literary jargon to where it's hard to understand the point she's getting across, exams based on memorization not content, and if your paper isn't PERFECT, you will receive a low grade. It's week 7 & I'm already burnt out.
