This professor throws the most obscure questions in his tests that really shouldn't be relevant and have barely been covered in lecture. The class seems easy and laid back until taking the tests. There are no study guides and no reading guide even though the text is required. Nice enough person and smart professor. For reference I have a 3.6 gpa.
A really sophisticated jump into Java programming in spatial sciences, though the class suffers a bit from poor pacing. You learn a lot, really, REALLY fast and you have to keep up to turn in the weekly labs on time. The TA is so important, first class i've ever had to use office hours consistently. Handy & well-worth class, but oh so painful!
With parts A & B holding your hand so much throughout your process of learning GIS skills, this class suddenly pushes you off a cliff. Total free will on your project but if you end up with a bad project idea you're screwed. Harsh grading considering no previous experience or teaching in writing spatial analysis essays or presenting GIS work.
Janowicz is an incredible professor. He cracks jokes, puts a smile on students faces and makes dry topics interesting. His tests are straight-forward (no tricks) and moderately difficult but if you ask for help, he WILL help clear up your concerns/questions. Labs are perfect and help to learn ArcGIS. Look forward to having him for 176C. )
I have him for 178 and 176B, he's very interested in helping the students and REALLY cares He is also a wonderful professor, uses everyday examples (in both 178 and 176) to help you understand theoretical concepts and uses homework as a chance to make you practice. Would take any class with him. Not easy, but clear and helpful. Also... so hot.
Jano is an awesome teacherhis TA was meh. Geog 178 is NOT a beginners Java class which really sucks since he is an awesome teacher. There was way too much content and no way to know what was going to be on the test Really passionate about what he teacheswouldn't recommend for beginnersHave to code from memory on tests, hard grader on tests too
Other than the occasional lecture during lab, the class was taught online by Prof Clarke (all recordings). HOWEVER, the lectures he did teach were good and easy to understand. We were told that he'll be adding some of his own info to the online class. Would definitely recommend the class if you're interested in every detail re: how maps are made.
I have had Jano for 3 quarters now. He has a wide range of knowledge - from coding to geography. He cares about what students want to learn and implement those materials into lectures. Tests are all based on lecture slides, textbook use is minimal. He does not curve,so class is not easy. Lab is very important, having a good ta helps A LOT!
This class gets pretty technical, but you only really need to know the basics a lot of the time- most of what was on the tests (which were multiple choice) was straight off of the lecture slides. He sets the pace of the class by what people want/need so if you're really interested or need extra help he'll spend extra time on a subject.
