OAKS L M
Down to earth and receptive. Will work with you to overcome any obstacle you are facing toward academic success. Was very thoughtful of the emotional energy students had throughout COVID. Proud to have met her, researched beside her, and learned from her as Dean of Feminist Studies.
I love Laury! I didn't take an actual course with her, but had her for a senior thesis project. We met once a week to discuss progress with other research students and she was always very kind and understanding. She truly cares about students and wants to make sure we're all okay and goes above and beyond to help people, a truly great professor!!
Although her tone is slightly dull, I really enjoyed this class and walked away from lectures with new perspectives. I still quote one of her anecdotes from class to others. Lectures and sections were discussion based and the discussions were very open and engaging. The class was very easy!
The class reading consists of one small textbook with only 5 chapters, you read about half a chapter a week. Lecture was interesting as Oaks frequently ask her students for their opinions. There is no midterm. The final is one essay that you have the whole quarter to work on and section breaks down the planning of the essay very thoroughly.
Very thorough and engaging in the class. Really nice and clearly passionate about the topic. Several papers that are easy if you put in the work and effort. The class is really informative and eye-opening and inspired me to become a feminist studies major.
Great material and easy assignments. Required textbook but she breaks up the reading load to about 30 pages a week and it's an easy read. Section & Lecture attendance mandatory (25% ). 2 main writing assignments, one of which is broken up into 4 assignments (total of 50%) & evaluation of campus event (25%). Easy A and wonderful course material.
I love her! This was the first upper division fem course, and I was nervous to take her, but she is wonderful. She creates an environment that encourages even the shyest to participate. She is understanding and responds quickly to emails. Her grading is clear-cut. Make sure to go to class! She is one of the best professors I have ever had.
Oaks is a great professor. She inspires thought in her course, and allows for students to see the world through a whole different lens. She encourages conversation during lecture. She is extremely intelligent. There is tons of reading. Beware. It's interesting, though.
I was apprehensive about taking this class at first, because I didn't know what it would be about...but i'm so glad I did! Professor Oaks is a wonderful instructor, I have never learned more in any other class. This class is not an easy A, but it is interesting and engaging--read and you will succeed!
So much reading. He's lectures summarize everything really well though. If you listen in lecture, you will do fine. The only things that were a challenge were the papers
As a student athlete, i hated this class.. not to mention i took it during season, but i hate to read. Attendance counts in lecture. She asks a lot of "idk you tell me" 's to make the class ponder a lot which always got me off track thinking ... wait what. Overall, i never read, just got the summary of each reading and got a B-. I WAS STRESSED!
Oaks flips through her powerpoint slides pretty fast. At times, it's tough to write down all the information she lectures. This class relies HEAVILY on the textbook. You will use all the readings in the book on your papers, midterm, and final exam. If you study and understand the concepts, you will do fine in this class.
