Prof. Elizondo is passionate about ethics and has vast knowledge on the thinkers and theories of the discipline. He is an outstanding lecturer, illuminating the texts he carefully chooses in a meaningful way. Your grade is based on three papers quarter-long and one final paper, all of which are straightforward if you read and attend lecture.
Elizondo has very inspiring and good lectures! He covers the reading with a lot of detail during lecture so you didn't have to struggle with the dense concepts alone. Graded on three papers and a final (which,,, was just a paper) Great class!
The best. I literally love him. His lectures made dense material accessible through his thoughtfully crafted expositions + analyses. His section on Kant was particularly engaging, it is his area of research and it shows. I feel super lucky to have been able to take one of his classes and I hope to take more in the future!!
TBH, you don't need to read much to get good grade on papers. Prof Elizondo makes very detailed and insightful conclusions of the contents that needed to elaborate a good enough paper. Indeed some people might consider his lectures very dry but they are pretty comprehensible. Definite one of the best choice.
These are the clearest lectures that I have ever watched. All of the information is presented in a very nice and logical order. Just take lecture notes and writing the papers will be a breeze.
Prof. Elizondo is a good philosophy professor. The class is pretty much just 4- 3 page papers based on the reading and lectures - very doable. I found that writing the essays with a lot of points he makes in lectures is the best way to get a solid grade. His lectures are definitely dry at times but the class material is very interesting IMO.
Sonny was a very good prof, although his lectures tended to be a bit dry at times. He repeated himself pretty often, but it helped me since I tend to zone out sometimes and helped solidify to me what was important to take note of. 3 papers of 3 pages each and a take-home final of the same style as the essays
passionate professor with a great knowledge on the subjects he teaches
I found his lectures to be fairly dry and it doesn't help that he is fairly monotone, but as long as you do the reading and follow his understanding of the texts then the papers shouldn't be too difficult. Be prepared to take a lot of notes, because he talks fairly fast and does not write much on the board.
he's honestly an amazing professor!! he's super passionate about the subject matter and outlines everything you need to know really well. there's no clicker, but attending lecture is really helpful when it comes to writing his essays. i'm not a phil major but i genuinely enjoyed taking this class. 100% recommend it
Sonny is a fantastic prof. I took his Phil 100A during spring 2017. He lectures in a very clear way, although the class in an 1 hour 15 mins and the material can get kinda thick. It's philosophy, what did you expect. He is truly passionate about the material and teaching, and cares that his students learn. Take this guy if you have the chance!
If you want to pass this class, attendance is a MUST. This was by far one of the hardest classes I've taken at UCSB but very rewarding and I would take again. Professor is great. He is kind, relaxed and eager to teach. Speaks slowly which helps when taking notes. No power points, few handouts. Show up and take good notes and you will pass.
