Professor Hidalgo is a nice lady. However, her class is not organized and her class readings make no sense. The subjects that she discusses in class are unnecessary. Overall didn't like her class and didn't get a good grade. Take this class with someone else if you can.
Professor really loves to teach. She takes really difficult text and simplifies it over and over again. I have had other professors go over the same text and did not get it. Shes funny and cares about what she does. Takes a lot of time to grade papers, down to small grammer errors which is helpful.
Work is intense and her quizzes do not make sense. She shows inappropriate films in class(pornography) and has intense readings. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE!
I had Prof Hidalgo for 3 courses this last quarter .. Soc 153, Soc 108F and Soc 159S. The readings are basically only for the small quizzes given, which aren't worth very much, but she insist on them being read. In one class I found the readings completely useless, but in the other two they were useful. Also, we watched a lot of Porn!
Do not confuse her intensity for passion...She countered the objective of this course and that was to enlighten students, to create awareness and to repair the imbalances between genders and between humans. She tipped the scale, weighed it down with cynicism and hostility...the balance was lost...This is not education...she is not a true educator.
She is very passionate about her work and really makes you understand things and think critically about issues you realize you have taken for granted your whole life. I think people don't like her because they are uncomfortable with such analyses and are in denial that they partake in these social institutions and hegemonies.
Awesome teacher, very passionate on the course. She expects her students to participate and do the readigs. If not, she'll randomly start asking us questions. books and films are extremely interesting. Freewrites and attendance help your grade so that's definitely a must. She is cute and very caring but challengin. Loved the course. 185s
Watched a lot of movies which kept the class interesting. I would recommend that you do most of the reading and go to all lectures and you should be fine. There were a few short papers, no midterm, and an essay style final. Good class that opens your eyes to the meaning of how marriage and family are done in the US. She's tough but willing to help
The instructor covered some interesting points, however the notes/lectures were very chaotic. She does give about 3 pop quizzes and they are on the readings. I bought all the books and the reader I only used the reader(make sure you read she ask questions). Over all I was not impressed with the quality of the course. It needs another instructor.
Amazing Professor! always some idiots in the class being disrespectful, but awesome content. really makes you think about the ways society works, and the stereotypes and assumptions we follow on an everyday basis.
She is amazing, ignore the heteronormative comments below (which ironically is exactly why she needs to be teaching this stuff). Very passionate, the class moves at a good pace and I am never bored. reading is reasonable, she grades reasonably but the midterm/paper/final is graded by the TA. I highly recommend her to everybody. EVERYBODY!
She embarrassed a female student in front of the entire class! Doesn't that defeat the purpose of instilling equality? Expectations are unrealistic for the quarter system and there is something angry about this woman!
