BARVOSA E
course is made up of lecture attendance, weekly gender journals, essay topic paragraph, two outlines, final paper, and final short essay exams. barvosa is very passionate about feminist theories she teaches but it can get a little confusing. she has no lecture slides and doesn't input grades throughout the quarter, she also doesn't reply to emails
She doesn't teach real feminist theory, only content that she has invented and has nothing to do with ACTUAL feminist theory. Her theories that she teaches are poor social science and super subjective, all centered around her personal beliefs. She belittled those who challenged her at all. My final was applying yin and yang to the movie Encanto...
Course consisted of weekly journals, and a final essay project broken down into essay topic, 2 essay outlines, and final essay along with a final exam. Final exam and essay are due the same day which was stressful. The other assignments were easily graded but Barvosa's a bit of a mess, she doesn't input grades at all and makes things very stressful
No grades input the ENTIRE quarter. Extremely passive-aggressive while providing little aid when students ask for help. Weekly Journals are easy enough but the term paper lacks instruction and clarity and is due the same day as the Final which also lacks clarity in what she wants from her students. Most work out of any online class ever taken.
In the class, completed journal, essay outline, final exam with three essays, and a final paper but receive scores of neither of these assignments. Participated in all group discussions and did extra credit but still a B. She did not respond to email after the final grade popped out on you gold. Irresponsible teacher and highly unorganized lecture.
The course is unclear and unorganized. Professor does not respond quickly and then has rude responses. She did not have consistent office hours and when she would change it, it was not enough time to prepare for the new hours. She does offer extra credit but sends it out last minute that you are so busy with finals that it is not easy to finish.
The online version of 181 has been so confusing. Spilt up the weeks into two "Cycles" but was inconsistent with posting readings (avg. 10-15 a week) and would change the schedule. Not great with communicating, and can be passive-aggressive over the UCSB Nectir chat. Gender journals due once a week, mid-term paper with unclear instructions. Eh.
Do not recommend her class. I took her for Gender and Society and she just made it about her book Deliberate Democracy. If you do take this class, know she gives out very last minute email notices, loses your finals, and then wont respond to your emails. Class is no powerpoint or any other form of guidance. Just one big conversation.
She is the very best person and teacher I have ever met
Confusing lectures at points. Very passionate about what she teaches about but is not the most sincere person. Section helps a lot. Must know all concepts in this course to do well. Essay assignment that is graded toughly and short answer/essay questions on exams. Try hard and you can do well, but definitely a tough course.
Overall great course. If you're passionate about this subject you wont have any brother. Only assignment was the gender journals which are to be tied in with the readings. one essay assignment 1800 words. midterm was a bit challenging but if you do study you should be fine. the topics she discussed are very relevant ton to only women but men too
Much of your grading depends on how close you are with your TA(so when it is time for the paper get you behind to Office hour). Second, make sure that you are actually going to spend time reviewing the key terms and themes that were explained in class. The readings should be done because they will help with writing the essay for the first midterm.
