Don't be intimidated by the giant belt buckle and the cowboy demeanor! Professor Mahall made me love plants (and I majored in zoology, so to me, plants are just food for more interesting things). I prefer his style of teaching (notes on the blackboard) as opposed to powerpoint lectures. Just take excellent notes and do a decent amount of studying.
Yes, more than half of this class was plant physiology, and Mahall does have high expectations, but he makes it pretty clear what you need to know for the tests. As long as you always go to class and section and take good notes, you can get a good grade with a reasonable amount of effort. I actually really enjoyed his class.
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS!
There's no structure to or flow in the lectures and no relation to the research papers. There has to be a certain criteria students can follow, but it's just a vomit of information. The topics covered in the class is all over the place and needs to be organized. It's freaking confusing! I feel more overwhelmed because I don't know what
I worked really hard and still only ended up with a B. Exams are really tricky and don't represent the info presented in class. He came across as indifferent when approached in office hours. Didn't really curve the class even though most people did not do well. I do not recommend the course unless you want to work really hard.
awful!barely studied ecology so dont be decieved.mostly plant physiology.makes u read a bunch of papers that he doesn't really test u on.test consists of t/f,matching,& memorizing names of arcane scientists &their research. LAME!!does not write on board. get ready 2 write notes the entire lecture & sift thru the irrelevance while studying 4 tests
