Had her for introduction to English, and learned more about PTSD, war, and death then english in that class. She makes the content interesting, and very helpful with the essays. Would take another class with her. Excellent professor, tests and essay requirements are challenging, but at the end of the semester, you learned a lot.
Amazing lecturer. However, she was always late. The syllabus was given the 4th week of the quarter. Midterm was supposed to be cancelled but a few days after she resumed it. A lot of reading required however she only spoke of at least 13rd of them in class. Midterm prompt was not prepared. Head of English dept had to step in and heavily syllabus
She was NEVER prepared for lecture and always winging it. She was unclear on class assignments. She was disorganized, and didn't give us the research paper assignment until last minute. She required way too many texts to read for a summer school 6 week period. She barely discussed any of the texts. NEVER RESPONDS TO EMAILS
Personable, relatable teacher. Makes class more interesting by taking away the lecture aspect and making us discuss the material as a class, instead of her preaching at us what she wants us to think. Grades fairly, read the material and you'll get a good grade. Tells some pretty hilarious personal anecdotes as well. Will take a class with her again
Great professor, definitely one of the best I've had at UCSB. Grades fairly and makes the material interesting and understandable, and relates it back to the other materials and course topic very well. We were given complete creative freedom on the papers, and making our own prompt helped make writing the paper more fun and personal.
She's a great teacher, really charismatic and interesting. She picks fantastic novels and really knows how to tie them together and connect them all back to the theme of the course, and to each other. Would definitely recommend taking as many classes as possible with her, she tells it like it is and has a great sense of humor.
I really don't understand all the negativity in these comments. She is funny and interesting. All it took was some time to talk out the papers in person. Expectations weren't too high, complete creative freedom, incredibly interesting topic, and she's good looking. I'd recommend it :)
She was never prepared for class, and often came more than 15 minutes late. She didn't provide any rubric or prompts for papers, but would grade harshly without explanations. She doesn't respond to emails, and speaks condescendingly to students. I didn't learn anything from her.
Unprofessional and unhelpful. Doesn't seem to take the class seriously, but grades harshly. Does not provide prompts or guidance on the papers. Does not make her expectations clear. Speaks condescendingly to students. Does not respond to emails and acts like you're wasting her time at office hours. All this coming from someone WHO GOT AN A.
Often seemed unprepared for each class, as though she wasn't sure what she wanted to teach that day. The books we read were interesting but she failed to tie everything together and the class as a whole felt pointless. Not sure if she's unmotivated because she won't be receiving a permanent job at UCSB but regardless, she's kind of unprofessional.
Wender is actually a really good teacher. For all those others stating how she's rude & attendance was harsh, well maybe youre just too sensitive! Wender has the type of humor where if you act like a smart ass she'll treat you like one. And when she jokes around it's really just a joke. Dont take it so harshly. Attendance is important in any class.
Very cool professor. Loves her subject and really wants you to learn.
