Even without a textbook, the course feels complete because his explanations are so clear and well organized. Every assignment directly reinforces and is based on the material taught in lecture. His lectures are among the clearest I have experienced at UCSB.

Attendance isn't mandatory but a lot of the content he only covers in lecture. Homeworks make up most of your grade so not too difficult. Assignments are easy enough if you go to class.

This guy is goated. By far the best lecturer I've ever had, assignments were easy (lectures prepare you well), and he was extremely nice.

Was enrolled in Math of Engr but the teacher put me in another Canvas CMPSC both about matrixes, resulted in a fully wasted quarter for this class, never answered to my mails. I recommend to double check that especially if its your 1st quarter at UCSB. Great guy and course other than that

Only take 111with the goat GIBOU. The lectures are hard to follow but you can look things up. Weekly hws on jupyter notebook. Midterm and Final were both just another hw assignment taken at home.

Professor Gibou makes ME17 a somewhat unique experience. The class is graded by a few homework assignments and take home "exams" which are really just more projects. Some concepts can be hard to grasp but he is happy to answer questions and will help you succeed. Grading was somewhat unpredictable but never overly harsh. Try to attend lecture.
