BT is an excellent Professor. One of the best prof I've had at UCSB.
BT is very particular in how she wants the 9 quizzes to be written but explains her expectations from day 1. She allows you to remake quizzes which boasts your grade. These were by far the best fem pieces I have ever read. You MUST read and take notes in class to do well on the quizzes/final. This class is doable but you have to put in the work.
she tells you from the beginning its going to be tough but also that you will learn a lot and to like the style. Overwhelming at first especially since the class is required but READ v carefully and take good notes & you'll be set for the 9 quizzes as class discussion covers every single article, but don't count on just those. BT rocks
BT is amazing and really cares about her students. There is a workload but it is manageable. You have to read but the readings usually relate theory to pop culture. Gives weekly quizzes but they can be retaken as many times as necessary. She may come off as intimidating at times but she is very much approachable. I have learned a lot in her class.
Really enjoyed working with her, she was clear she kept her word was very organized and very kind and positive. Best person i worked with there. Was also my advisor
BT's class is tough caused you have to work hard for your grade, but shes soo helpful and caring. she wants students to learn and do well. see her during office hrs, it helps a ton! 8 quizzes (that you can redo/makeup)& 2 writing events 1pg min (1 you can revise after she gives feedback). she's funny, super helpful, & has super clear expectations
The comments on this site terrified me & I wanted to drop out of school bc I was scared I was going to fail. Tomlinson is an AMAZING professor. I learned so much in FEM 180 bc she forced students to work hard & EARN their grade. 5 quizzes/3 writing events( you can redo them). Gives quiz questions beforehand. Relax...& you'll do fine. Professor Tomlinson is one of the best professors I've ever had. She definitely assigns a lot of work, but she really makes you focus on the specific theories and arguments of each article/reading assigned. I believe she is very difficult but the work is doable. There is no way you can skip a reading assignment without endangering your grade.
This little lady is very tough. One of her quizzes almost made me cry. You will definitely learn a lot from her but make sure you have plenty of time to devote to the class. Don't do as I did and take this class as part of a 20 unit load.
BT is the best teacher i have had at ucsb after 4 years. she is incredibly intelligent and has a fantastic dry sense of humor. she expects AND accepts only the best quality work... but it's fine because you can re-write your papers and turn them in whenever you finish! honestly... if you take her class, you will fall in love. =)
She's incredibly tough BUT you will learn SO much from her. STRONGLY recommend that you take her class if you want to learn how to read and write at the graduate student level and if you're taking less than 16 units because she assigns a lot of reading and writing. I feel that I've learned more from her this quarter than I have in 3 years!
IF YOU DO NOT HAVE TO TAKE A CLASS WITH HER DON'T!! She will make you rewrite papers because she doesn't like your comma use and the way you discussed a quoteI don't know a single person who wishes they could drop her class.But hey if you don't turn any one of her 20 papers or rewrites in she will gove you an F or drop you no exceptions
