Professor Genetti is, without doubt, one of the least effective teachers at UCSB. Though she pretends to be classically trained, she makes many grammatical and logical blunders during each class session. When her cognitive limits prevent her from comprehending students' questions and concerns, she resorts to heavy-handed belittling commentary.
She's super chill and friendly. She is very easy to understand. As long as you do all the readings, you will do perfectly fine in this class. Her lectures are pretty much 100% based off of the readings. You do need to go to all the lectures because she uses iClickers to track attendance, which is part of the grade.
Not what I expected, though still interesting at times. The mid-term was rough. There's a lot of work (homework, quizzes, reading, practice, etc.) and a lot to learn. Everything was online, but the book for this class is in the last stages of being published. She's nice, a little dull, but clear most of the time.
This class is not what I thought it would be. The description says that you're learning about how languages developed but in reality all you do is learn the differences in how languages pronounce their words. This class has eliminated linguistics as a major for me. The entire class is online anyway. TA's are extremely unhelpful.
Because everything is online for this class, it seems a bit overwhelming at times; there's just so much to keep track of when you log on to Moodle. However, 45% of your grade is homework (that is often based on completion), and I think that if you study (especially the IPA), and do all the required work, you can get a good grade. Get a good TA--Lea
lots of homework, tons of new info that she covers in very little time, there are quiz, midterm, and final, everything is online
Her whole class syllabus is ONLINE! No books, only online readings. She always provides overhead slides to be printed out before class so you can follow along,GREAT idea! She explains well, but not always too clear. Is always helpful and friendly. Provides study guide for all sections.tests are not that easy, material is complicated!go to office hrs!
