BUCHOLTZ M H
This class was really interesting, but it is a lot like LING 70 if you have taken that class before. This was my first upper division class and it was still very manageable. She is super accommodating and very knowledgeable.
super easy class, no midterm or final just group projects and writing assignments.
One of the best professors at UCSB. She clearly cares about her students and understands the struggles that students go through in college. The actual class is easy, lots of random work but easy stuff. Easy A, just show up and do your assignments.
Mary is super sweet, and made 3 hour lectures at 5pm bearable. The class is sort of just one huge discussion, almost like group therapy. Everyone speaks up and supports one another, and the linguistic concepts are pretty easy to understand. A really cool class.
loml!!! she's amazing and sweet and doesn't believe in exams so no midterms, there is a tiny final project. lectures were half material half kahoot games/selfcare lessons. easy sections with little group projects. weekly quizzes from weekly readings and iclicker in lectures and you'll pass no problem. she makes class super fun and interesting!
Great class, but lectures were awkward at times due to Professor Bucholtz's white guilt that would show through some of the things she would say. Other than that, there are a lot of assignments, but a lot of things end up being dropped from your grade. No in-class midterm/final. Overall, an easy A. Just wish it was taught by a person of color.
This class requires a lot of assignments and readings, but there is not textbook or in class exams of any kind given. If you go to class, do the assignments, and show participation in section, it is easy to get an A. The content of this class is also very intriguing and greatly sparked my interest in linguistics.
One of my favorite professors and courses at UCSB. Very relatable, and personable instructor who really cares about her students, and wants to see everyone succeed. Really learned a lot of powerful material in 10 weeks. Very fair grader. Makes lecture and section both engaging and interesting. Highly recommend.
My favorite class taken at UCSB in my 4 years here. As a non-lingusitics major, I was pleasantly surprised that this class did not require any linguistics background to do well and enjoy the class. All coursework was interesting and interactive (interviews w friends instead of papers kind of thing), and I never felt overloaded with assignments.
Great teacher, very funny. Love her lectures . All readings are online and one quiz every week in lecture. Project is fun requires team work , and there is a take home final.
Tell her what she wants to hear and you'll do great. Unwilling to admit she's wrong. Does not present a well rounded course and presents her own view as "the answer". TONS of busy work.
While I gave her a "5" for easiness, the class required A LOT of work. Quizzes every week, a huge (stressful) project, forum posts, and a take-home final. I enjoyed it but it felt like a lot sometimes. I got an A and I'm sure a lot of people did too, while learning a lot, but just be warned that it can be a lot. Definitely try her classes though.
