Allaback is one of a kind. It's been quite a few years since I took his classes (and I took as many as I could), I still have my journals from the class and occasionally look back at them when I need a lift. He got a lot of thinking and writing out of us. He was just great. Wish I could take another class with him.
Steve is super friendly, and the majority of short stories assigned in this class are quite interesting. Not a tough class, just do the reading and assignments. Can't really see Allaback getting angry. Seems like he would be a cool guy to have for a dad. Take this class if you need the GE for Area G! Was pretty pessimistic coming in, but loved it.
I took English 109 with Steve Allaback at the University of Connecticut in 1967. He was a wonderful teacher and a wise and friendly counselor who cared about his students.
Took his summer course on Hemingway. Allaback is more concerned with the learning process and allowing his students to get something out of a class instead of having them stress out over pointless midterms and finals. Just turn in the daily journal for the assigned reading and participate in class. Easy A.
He is an incredible teacher and although there are no finals or tests, you do have to think about the journals that he has you turn in for every class. Fortunately, all of the readings are really fun and it never seems like work. He's hilarious and he likes to listen to people's conversations as they walk by the class. Take him if you can!
He is a fun professor. No midterm or final, but that doesn't mean no work! You should really love reading and discussing literature if you want to take one of his classes. We read 6 novels and had an assignment due every class meeting.
interesting class, great prof.
Wonderful class, great prof. The first class I can say I truly enjoyed attending. Kept things interesting, and I learned a lot.
I've taken two classes with him. I love the classes. He definitely has his own style, but if you want to get a lot out of the class, you can. It just makes you slow down and think about class differently. No lectures, all discussion
Allaback teaches good classes. He does make me long for a good long lecture though. If you are looking for a low stress professor he's your man. I got sick of hearing nothing but student discussion though. He ought to share what he KNOWS more often.
If you're okay with not knowing what grade you are going to get until you check GOLD, take this class. We have daily papers, no midterm or final, but comments on papers are pretty vague. I was convinced he hated me, then I got an A...Confused the whole time. but interesting reading...
