Very nice guy. Class starts with rather abstract concepts first, which can be disengaging. Presentations are very eloquent and structured. Wish there were more examples of culture other than the numerous ones about music. Europe + America-centric class material. Overall, very interesting if you pay attention during lectures. And no textbook!

Professor Cruz is a super nice guy & very passionate about the subject he is teaching, however I found lectures to be very boring. No attendance taken but 4 pop quizzes throughout the quarter which counts for attendance. He posts reading online. Easy A reading reading reflections every other week. I midterm (5-7) paper and one final (7-10) paper.

Boring course material. about how the term "culture" was created rather studying specific cultures. Cruz is a nice energetic guy but lecture dragged. Everyone was always on their phone or on Facebook. never did the readings & got a B. 4 freewrite papers (3 pages each), 1 mideterm (5 pages), & final (7-10 pages). Will not take professor again

Cruz is a passionate lecturer. He gives you many ways to look at the topic which is helpful in your understanding. Lectures aren't in a ABC123 format, more fluid-type bullets. He hilites whats important and posts all reading and lectures on GS. Every other week a short reflection is due- easy. 5pg MT 10g final. 2nd class I've taken with him. Good!

I never really understood his teaching style. I always felt his lectures were all over the place as well as his pwrpts. He really is nice though. Luckily I relied on my previous soc class knowledge to make sense of it all. poor guy

Nice guy but this class sucked. The lectures had nothing to do with the readings which had nothing to do with the papers. Class isn't too hard, 3 pg reflections every other week, midterm & final. I just wish someone else taught it because a class titled Culture should be fun

Great & passionate lecturer. Takes a dull & hard subject & makes it easier to understand. PPTs on GS. Everyother week a 3pg reflection is due based off of what you think about the material- very easy. MT & F prompts given 2wks before due date. Great class, I'm def. taking a class with him again.

He is one of the "crazy" teachers that's fun. He really tries to get you to think even if you trying to sit in the back and blowing the class off, you are always interested because its fun. Power points are boring, but they are all online so attendance is whatever, just benefits you if you don't understand the PPs. Weekly 2 page paper easy

Wow!He really loves what he does. He takes an extremely tough subject to wrap your brain around, and actually makes it understandable. He is one of the best professors that I have had at UCSB.
